Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of a Senior Transportation Surveyor, the incumbent will perform a wide variety of difficult and complex land surveying work in the Right of Way Engineering Office including but not limited to the following: preparing Right of Way Engineering documents, court exhibits, deeds and legal descriptions; performing technical studies and reviewing and interpreting field notes; and other survey related work as required. As the incumbent progresses in experience, they will be assigned more difficult work.

Working Conditions

Position located at 1750 E 4th St Santa Ana CA, Orange County.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

While the work site is generally confined to the District 12 Headquarters in the City of Santa Ana, the incumbent must be able and willing to work remotely in a telework setting and perform all assigned functions effectively and timely. The incumbent may also be required to perform field trips, drive, work outside in a field environment with dirt, noise, rough terrain, high speed freeway traffic and heavy equipment. Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a state or leased vehicle.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications based on possession of an education, a Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT), or Land Surveyor (LS) certificate must include a copy of your degree/transcripts, LSIT, or LS certificate along with your State application (STD. 678) to be considered for this position.

Special Requirements

  • A valid Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) certificate, or equivalent certificate accepted by the California State Board of Registration, or graduation from a four-year curriculum in surveying, surveying engineering or surveying geomatics accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology is required for range A-C. A valid Professional Land Surveyor license issued by the California State Board of Registration is required for range D.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.

CADD mapping experience, Microstation and GIS experience is a plus.
