We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.OverviewJoby Aviation is seeking a passionate & experienced thermal engineer to join our Powertrain team in San Carlos, CA to support development of the Joby S4 aircraft. In addition to building & verifying simulations, as thermal attribute owners we bring cross-functional teams together to highlight sensitivities, inform trade studies, and drive optimal designs. This role will primarily support the Electric Propulsion Unit, Energy Storage & Distribution System, System Electronics, & Electrical System Installation teams. We are open to a Senior or Staff level Engineer for this role..ResponsibilitiesDetermine appropriate modeling complexity to support critical designs, program decisions, & project timelinesBuild & validate models supporting system optimization, performance, & trade studiesBrings key stakeholders & function groups together to drive solutions to complex problemsBuild coalitions with key stakeholders & functional groups to drive solutions to completionRequired5+ years of industry experience & post-graduate degree, or demonstrated equivalentSuccessful track record of bringing products to market & managing project deliverablesStrong fundamentals in thermodynamics, aerodynamics, & data analysisDirect experience building lumped-parameter thermal network models Working knowledge of at least one CFD analysis toolkit such as STAR-CCM, OpenFOAM, Ansys, etc. Familiarity with at least one scripting language & optimization toolkitAbility to be onsite at our San Carlos, CA facilityDesired10+ years of industry experience with STAR-CCM and 3DX (CATIA)Proficiency in Python, Matlab, & SimulinkExperience with DatabricksCompetence in R-value tuning, RMSE minimization, Bayesian optimization, thermal neural networks, & posterior probability sensitivity analysisPostgraduate qualification & relevant work experience in aviation or automotive industriesExpertise in fan impeller design, aeroacoustics modeling, or refrigeration/thermal system control designAdditional InformationCompensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $131,000 - $222,000/yr.
