Manager Clinical Protocol Administration - Surgical Oncology

Overview The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking a Manager Clinical Protocol Administration to support the Surgical Oncology department. The role is critical for overseeing clinical research finance, protocol administration, and operational activities that support complex, patient-centered research across multiple surgical oncology specialties. The Manager collaborates closely with Principal Investigators, clinical teams, research staff, and institutional partners to ensure compliant, efficient, and financially sound execution of clinical research protocols that advance innovative cancer treatment strategies. Key Responsibilities Negotiate contractual language and communicate terms to Principal Investigators for approval. Communicate all budget aspects to Principal Investigators and secure required approvals and signatures. Review coverage analyses to ensure all research-related costs are captured. Create and manage study budgets, including personnel salary, tissue bank, pharmacy, and miscellaneous invoiceable charges. Ensure contracts are entered into the system, fully executed, filed, and tracked through completion. Work with research personnel to create and maintain payment spreadsheets, submit invoices for all contractually defined milestones, and monitor receipt and application of funds. Resolve overdrafts, request expense transfers, manage no‑cost extensions, and coordinate account closure and fund sweeps. Participate in planning, monitoring, execution, and close‑out of research activities, including protocol development, study prioritization, activation, monitoring, data support, invoice/budget reconciliation, free balance reporting, and effort certification. Assess financial feasibility of protocols and patient accrual activities; ensure departmental compliance with institutional standards related to research patient charges, budgeting, and expenditures. Maintain financial and for internal tracking across the research lifecycle and attend related meetings and continuing education programs. Support pre‑award and post‑award grant activities, maintain grant databases, generate financial reports, prepare cost projections, and stay current on funding agency guidelines. Manage productivity, performance, training, and development of assigned staff and assess staffing needs in collaboration with management. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Healthcare, Nursing, or a related field (required). Master’s Degree in a related field is preferred. Experience: Six years of extensive research administrative experience in a biotechnology or academic setting, including two years with research protocols, grants, and contracts; two years of supervisory or management experience. Additional manual or online training can substitute for one or two years of supervisory experience. Other Requirements Must pass pre‑employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
