Mental Health Associate - Medical Detox Unit

$22.54 - $37.64 per hour

Overview Mental Health Associate works with the treatment team to ensure complete coordination of the patient treatment plan from admission through discharge. Qualifications Educational Requirements: Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, or related field. Certification & Licensure Requirements: Certified Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor (CADC) – must possess and maintain a current certification from Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association within three years of hire/start date. Must have control over personal use of all mood‑altering chemicals and behaviors. If recovering from an addiction, must have at least 2 years of uninterrupted recovery and must actively treat this addiction by appropriate recovery practices. Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position. Other Requirements: Required English Skills: Advanced reading, writing, oral communication, ability to respond appropriately to customers/co‑workers, interaction with a wide variety of people, maintain confidential information, communicate facts only, and decline to reveal information. Computer Skills: Basic computer knowledge – word processing, spreadsheet, e‑mail, web browser, comfortable within Windows OS and learning new applications. Responsibilities Assist the interdisciplinary treatment team in patient assessments and the development of goal‑directed treatment. Work with the treatment team to provide complete services to patients. Accurately document activities according to the policies and procedures of the IIAR. Provide emergency assistance for inappropriate patient behavior, utilizing verbal redirection, other staff, quiet rooms before instituting emergency measures such as security alerts or restraints. Work with patients who present a dual problem, co‑occurring substance use and mental health disorder. Institute daily program format on the adult, guide activities on the daily schedule, instill a sense of positive empowerment. Ensure all patient contact and interaction is based upon inherent dignity, individuality, culture, and beliefs. Provide care in a compassionate, humane, non‑enabling manner. Provide patient care with attention to age‑specific needs. Conduct addiction assessments including patient rights, obtaining releases of information, advanced directives, etc. Participate in interdisciplinary clinical staffing or ensure pertinent information is provided to team. Demonstrate motivational interviewing skills when working with patients. Serve as witness for RNs when wasting medication. Therapeutic Environment and Safety Focus Set behavioral limits on patients according to unit policies, individual plan of care, and behavior modification plans. De‑escalate patients utilizing CPI techniques. Participate in application of seclusion/restraints when appropriate; monitor patients, complete documentation, including restriction of rights forms. Provide supportive care to patients and families. Conduct safety rounds. Assist patients in conflict resolution. Role‑model stress management. Ensure patient safety of unit by following policies/procedures and adhering to unit protocols and national patient safety goals. Therapeutic Groups and Individual Therapies Facilitate educational sessions, structured groups, and psychoeducational groups in accordance with patients’ plan of care. Utilize a variety of therapeutic models, primarily a brief therapy/cognitive behavioral therapy focus. Ensure the milieu maintains a therapeutic environment. Incorporate recovery principles in all therapeutic interventions. Document interventions succinctly and goal‑directed using DAR format. Recognize and report abuse/neglect situations as required by law. Provide support, set limits, and facilitate learning from the situation in 1:1 interventions. Adhere to group rules and scheduled groups start and end on time. Follow group content outlines in group manual and individualize groups to needs of current patient population. Engage patients to participate as appropriate in community meetings. Interact with parents/significant others to answer programming questions, patient progress, etc. Provide accurate, objective data during report to oncoming shift in supplement to RN report.
