Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Our client , an advanced energy technology organization developing next-generation nuclear power systems, is looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer . This role supports the conceptual and preliminary design of complex mechanical equipment and reactor core components for an advanced energy program, collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop innovative, high-quality mechanical design solutions.

Location: Bellevue, WA or United States - Remote
Duration: 12 months
Compensation: $52 - $85 per hour.
Additional Compensation: This position is not eligible for bonus or incentive compensation.

Summary:
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for designing complex mechanical equipment and reactor-related components from concept through preliminary design. This role partners closely with engineering and project teams to develop design solutions, perform engineering analyses, support product testing, and validate system performance. The ideal candidate has strong equipment design experience, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop mechanical design solutions for complex equipment and components, including engineering drawings, 3D models, and technical specifications.

• Collaborate with engineering and project teams to translate design requirements into manufacturable solutions.

• Plan, coordinate, and execute assigned mechanical design activities while maintaining project schedules and technical objectives.

• Develop engineering test strategies and support product testing to validate functional and performance requirements.

• Perform engineering trade studies and scoping analyses to evaluate design alternatives.

• Conduct engineering reviews and provide technical feedback on designs, analyses, and documentation.

• Partner with cross-functional engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle.

• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers, designers, suppliers, and subcontractors as needed.

• Support continuous improvement initiatives by applying engineering best practices and identifying opportunities to enhance design processes and product quality.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

• Minimum of 5 years of equipment or mechanical component design experience (relevant Master's or Ph.D. degrees may substitute for up to two or four years of experience, respectively).

• Experience using 3D CAD software, preferably SolidWorks.

• Experience designing and executing engineering experiments with an emphasis on product testing and validation.

• Experience performing finite element stress analysis, mechanical analysis, and first-principles engineering calculations.

• Familiarity with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

• Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.

• Ability to manage multiple engineering assignments simultaneously with minimal supervision.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality engineering work.

Nice to Have:

• Experience supporting product development in highly regulated industries such as nuclear, aerospace, defense, or energy.

• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle.

• Experience developing engineering documentation, test plans, and design reports.

• Familiarity with engineering standards, quality systems, and design verification practices.

• Experience with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III, Division 5.

• Experience using ANSYS for finite element analysis.

• Experience supporting first article production, manufacturing processes, supplier technical reviews, and nonconformance resolution.

• Knowledge of thermal-hydraulics, structural analysis, neutronics, or related engineering disciplines.
