Job Description
Sterile Processing Technician

Position Overview

This position involves receiving and reprocessing reusable instruments throughout the healthcare facility. The technician will perform cleaning and sterilizing duties, prepare and assemble medical and surgical supplies, and maintain the sterile processing areas. Responsibilities also include receiving and distributing surgical supplies and equipment, as well as assisting with inventory control in the surgical department.

Essential Job Functions

• Adhere to established protocols for cleaning, decontaminating, preparing, packaging, disinfecting or sterilizing, and storing medical and surgical supplies and equipment.
• Distribute medical and surgical supplies from sterile processing areas to other areas within the facility as needed.
• Follow standard precautions, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Comply with safety procedures and manufacturer's instructions when handling cleaning solutions, supplies, and equipment.
• Safely operate equipment utilized in the sterile processing areas according to manufacturer's guidelines.
• Monitor, interpret, and document results of physical, chemical, and biological indicators for all types of sterilizers.
• Prepare and distribute surgical case carts according to physician preference lists and anticipated needs of the perioperative team.
• Inventory, receive, and restock materials used in sterile processing services.
• Comply with organizational policies, regulatory and accreditation standards, and professional guidelines.
• Exhibit professional interpersonal and communication skills.
• Assist in improving the quality of sterile processing services.
• Assist in identifying pertinent evidence to establish benchmarks as directed.
• Ensure the privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
• Support the hospital's mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
• Participate in required education for applicable programs.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

• Required: High school graduate or GED.
• Preferred: Completion of a Sterile Processing Technician Program.

Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

• Required: None.
• Preferred: Sterile Processing Technician Certificate and CRASE training (required if travel assignment extends beyond a 6-month period).

Experience

• Required: None.
• Preferred: Previous sterile processing experience.

Physical Requirements

The physical and sensory functions necessary for the successful performance of this position include:

• Sufficient auditory ability to detect and respond to various sounds, including alarms and verbal communication.
• Clear and effective communication skills to interact with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
• Visual acuity for observing patient conditions, reading documentation, and distinguishing colors for clinical purposes.
• Tactile perception for assessing physical characteristics such as temperature, size, and texture.
• Motor coordination for performing tasks necessary for the use of medical equipment.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and frequent handling of objects or patients weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Occasional lifting or transferring of individuals weighing over 100 pounds, using appropriate lifting techniques and mechanical aids.

Working Conditions

This position is primarily performed in an indoor healthcare environment. While protected from outdoor weather, the work may be subject to variable indoor temperatures. The role involves frequent exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous materials, and medical equipment, requiring adherence to safety protocols and the use of PPE. The healthcare environment can be fast-paced and unpredictable, necessitating quick responses to changing circumstances.
