Network Engineer

Job Description Position: Network Engineer Effective Date: 06/23/2026 Employment Status: Full-Time Salary: Based on experience, education, and relevant certifications held. FLSA Status: Non-exempt Minimum Education Requirements: Associate's degree in Computer Information Systems or equivalent Direct Supervisor: Director of Information Technology Supervisory Responsibility: None Primary Work Location: Office or Remote Sites Desired Certification(s): Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), CompTIA Network+, and CompTIA Security+ Experience: Two (2) years with Cisco, Meraki, Voice over IP (VoIP), Satellite, and Cellular Router Systems Summary Under the supervision of the Information Technology Director, the Network Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining the network and system infrastructure that supports all City Departments data communications networks and computer systems. Duties & Responsibilities Network architecture and design VLAN segmentation and implementation Routing and switching configuration Firewall management (in conjunction with Cybersecurity) VPN connectivity and site integration IP addressing structure and management, Network performance and stability Network equipment lifecycle and firmware management Work with the Cybersecurity and Systems Administrator to secure and optimize the network Assess and improve VPN connectivity for performance, high availability, and redundancy Maintain network documentation and network maps Standardize wireless SSIDs and configuration Maintain and respond to network monitoring and alerting systems Maintain backups of all network device configurations and ensure recoverability Coordinate with vendors for troubleshooting and support Skills Handle stress effectively without it interfering with performance. Organize, set priorities, and exercise sound independent judgment within areas of responsibility. Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid and concise conclusions. Effectively communicate complex subject matter both verbally and in writing. Flexible and able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. Must be organized and be able to manage projects of varying lengths. Positive, self-motivated individual who can complete tasks independently. Microsoft 365/Office 365/Exchange Online administration and support. Microsoft server and client operating systems (setup, config, and migration). Server cluster architecture. Server virtualization technologies and Switches. Microsoft PowerShell and other scripting languages. Familiar with NIST 800-171 compliance requirements. Exceptional technical documentation writing skills. Mentor/cross-train team members on existing and new technologies. Abilities Must be able to drive to and perform maintenance to all City-owned sites in all weather conditions. May be required to lift objects weighing 50 pounds. Facilitate group processes, implement effective problem-solving solutions, and build consensus among competing interests. Establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with elected officials, the city manager, department heads, other employees, employees of other agencies, and the general public.
