Librarian Supervisor

Responsibilities Responsible for managing and overseeing all activities, programs, services, and assigned staff of the Yorktown Branch Library. Performs administrative work and serves on the Library Senior Management Team. May assume responsibility for library operations in the absence of the Director of Library Services. Responsible for overall management of the Yorktown branch library; provides input in the development of the budget and library plans; makes and approves purchases for programs, operations, training, and special activities. Performs, coordinates, and oversees personnel related duties including employee training, recruiting, performance reviews, staff schedules, timekeeping and reporting. Develops, coordinates, and implements programs, services, policies and procedures. Prepares and analyzes a variety of reports and statistics; evaluates existing services. Responsible for overseeing operation and maintenance of library building and grounds; responsible for dealing effectively with emergencies related to building and grounds; communicates with appropriate internal and external staff. Assists management in planning, organizing and directing operations of Library Services; collaborates and partners with County employees, volunteers, library board members, and community members. Facilitates staff participation in the planning process; develops and ensures staff understanding of policies and procedures to implement objectives. In collaboration with the Collection Development Librarian, evaluates and analyzes the branch collection as part of an orderly collection development process; maintains current collection based on needs of patrons. Partners with managers and staff to ensure the successful implementation of planned activities and effective flow of information; assist in the process of problem- solving, planning, and reporting to support the delivery of library services. Monitors automated functions and equipment ensuring effective communication with appropriate staff when problems occur. Prepares, submits, or oversees preparation and submission of records and reports as required by local, state, and federal agencies. Attends a variety of local, state, and national meetings, conferences and training sessions to enhance and maintain knowledge of trends and developments in the library profession. Assists in coordinating and participates in special events and activities, which may include evenings and weekends. Serves as backup to other management staff members and may assume responsibilities of subordinates in their absence. Contributes to public relation activities. Represents the library at community and professional meetings appropriate to the position and as requested by the Director of Library Services. Qualifications This job is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment checks to include driving record, criminal history and background checks. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a master’s degree in library science from an ALAaccredited institution, and 5 - 7 years of professional level experience in public library work, including some 1-3 years of supervisory and/or management experience. Possession of a Professional Library Certificate issued by the State Library Board. Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of library administration. Thorough knowledge of modern management principles, methods, and techniques. Comprehensive knowledge of professional library literature. General knowledge of budget development and preparation. General knowledge of library related database systems, equipment, and technology. Thorough knowledge of personal computers and knowledge of their various applications. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate and interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize, multitask, analyze, and evaluate procedures and work methods, exercising appropriate judgment in establishing priorities and methods. Ability to collect, organize, record, and process information quickly and efficiently. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community leaders, public officials, professional groups, and the general public. Ability to plan, supervise, direct, and evaluate the work of others. Ability to analyze library needs, and to evaluate library services. Ability to present program and agency information and updates to the general public and community stakeholders (in small or large group settings). Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, 3D printers, laminators, copiers, etc. Work usually requires walking, sitting, or standing to a significant degree, but also involves bending and stopping.
