CDL Class A Port & Container Driver

Location: New Jersey
Job Type: Full-Time | Company Driver
Schedule: Local/Regional | Daily Home Time

Job Summary

Seeking an experienced and safety-focused CDL Class A Driver to transport import and export containers between the Port of New York/New Jersey, rail terminals, New Jersey facilities, warehouses, and customer locations.

This is a full-time company-driver position offering consistent, year-round work and daily home time. The ideal candidate has recent experience with container drayage and the Port of New York/New Jersey and understands the importance of safety, documentation, communication, and meeting terminal and customer appointments.

Responsibilities

• Safely transport 20', 40', and 45' ocean containers between ports, rail terminals, warehouses, and customer locations.
• Complete thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of tractors, chassis, and containers.
• Verify container numbers, seals, chassis numbers, permits, bills of lading, delivery instructions, and required documentation before moving equipment.
• Accurately update dispatch and transportation systems throughout each assignment.
• Document arrival and departure times and ensure customer POD information matches system records.
• Upload required terminal receipts, PODs, bills of lading, and other documents immediately after pickup or delivery.
• Report equipment defects, damage, delays, accidents, citations, cargo issues, and other exceptions immediately.
• Never operate unsafe equipment; stop and contact dispatch when necessary.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and inspection-ready tractor.
• Follow all DOT/FMCSA, port, customer, Hazmat, ELD, hours-of-service, and company safety requirements.
• Represent the company professionally when interacting with terminals, customers, dispatch, and other drivers.

Required Qualifications

• Valid CDL Class A license
• Current DOT Medical Card
• TWIC Card
• Hazmat Endorsement
• 2+ years of verifiable tractor-trailer driving experience
• Recent container drayage experience required
• Recent Port of New York/New Jersey driving experience required
• Clean/acceptable MVR, PSP, and safety history
• Must meet company and insurance qualification requirements
• Must successfully complete required DOT drug and alcohol testing, FMCSA Clearinghouse review, background check, and pre-employment screening
• Reliable personal transportation, as start times may be earlier than public transportation availability
• Ability to use smartphone-based applications, take clear photos of documents, and communicate effectively with dispatch

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform equipment inspections and safely climb in and out of the tractor.
• Ability to connect air and electrical lines.
• Ability to operate landing gear and secure chassis locks and pins.
• Ability to perform the physical duties associated with container and chassis operations.

Schedule & Reliability

• Daily home time
• Flexible schedule required based on appointments and assignments.
• Start times commonly range from 3:00 AM–6:00 AM, depending on the day's route and terminal appointments.
• Drivers are expected to review the following day's assignments in advance and arrive ready to work on time.
• Must plan routes responsibly to meet terminal cutoffs and customer appointments while maintaining safe driving practices.

CDL A + TWIC + Hazmat + recent Port NY/NJ container drayage experience are required.
