Job Summary:
The Project Technician is a field-based installation and retrofit role responsible for executing commercial HVAC projects including equipment changeouts, system upgrades, piping installations, and mechanical retrofits. This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, pipe fitting skills, and the ability to work from project plans and specifications across commercial and industrial facilities.
This role focuses on retrofit and addition work—not new construction . A successful Project Technician will install equipment efficiently, solve field installation challenges, work collaboratively with project teams, and ensure quality installations that meet design intent and customer expectations.
Familiarity and comfort navigating commercial building layouts is critical to success in this role. Youll work in occupied buildings with varying access constraints, coordinate with facility staff, and need to understand how mechanical systems integrate within existing building infrastructure.
The Project Technician reads plans, fabricates and installs piping systems, sets equipment, makes final connections, and ensures all work meets code and safety standards.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Pipe fitting experience – NPT pipe, steel weld pipe, PVC pipe
Welding hydronic piping – experience with hot water and chilled water systems
Refrigerant piping experience – brazing, proper practices, pressure testing
Rigging experience – safely moving and setting large equipment
Heating water and steam system knowledge
Understanding of mechanical systems and design considerations
Knowledge of hydronic mechanical systems and design limitations on various equipment
Basic electrical knowledge related to HVAC equipment
Understanding of refrigeration circuits and mechanical system operation
Requirements: Required Skills and Abilities
5-7 years of experience with commercial HVAC systems
Ability to survey and understand commercial HVAC mechanical systems and building layouts
Comfort working in occupied commercial buildings with varying layouts, access points, and constraints
Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to solve field installation challenges
Professional demeanor and ability to represent the company on customer sites
Self-motivated with strong work ethic and attention to quality
Ability to navigate complex buildings, locate equipment rooms, and understand spatial relationships between mechanical systems
Preferred Skills and Abilities – These would greatly enhance your likelihood of being a best-fit candidate
Experience with chiller and boiler installations
Background in commercial building retrofits or equipment replacement projects
Familiarity with various commercial building types (office buildings, hospitals, schools, multi-tenant facilities, industrial plants)
Experience with cooling towers, air handlers, and packaged equipment installations
Knowledge of variable frequency drives (VFDs) and modern control systems
Certifications in welding, rigging, or related trades
Education & Trade Licensing
Technical school degree or certificate preferred (HVAC, mechanical systems, building trades)
If there is no technical degree, a formalized apprenticeship program is strongly preferred
Journeyman’s License required
Physical Requirements – Must be able to regularly perform the following tasks
Travel to customer sites daily, including commercial buildings, industrial facilities, and multi-story properties
Navigate complex building layouts including mechanical rooms, rooftops, crawl spaces, basements, and equipment areas
Access equipment in challenging locations within occupied buildings
Lift and move equipment, tools, and materials up to 75 lbs regularly
Work in varying environmental conditions (heat, cold, confined spaces, heights)
Safely climb ladders and scaffolding, kneel, bend, and stand for extended periods
Use hand and power tools, welding equipment, and rigging equipment safely and effectively
Other Requirements
Must have a valid Driver’s license
Must have reliable transportation
Must be able to pass a drug screening and background check
Must pass a re-employment physical assessment
Knowledge of and adherence to safe work practices are required
Maintains current technical knowledge regarding equipment, systems, and industry best practices
