Description:
GENERAL SUMMARY :
Supervises and directs the officers assigned to his/her shift and assists in conducting surveillance so as to provide a safe and secure environment within the buildings of the hospital and in the parking lots.

Security Access: High "Incumbent has access to restricted or confidential patient information and must comply with the terms of the Mercy Medical Center Security Policies as it applies to their job role."
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
Oversees all security officers' activities on assignedshift,make shiftand duty assignments.
AssistsDirector on hospital related investigations.
Assists Director and Safety Office withestablishingdepartmental goals, as well asdeterminingmannerin whichto best achieve goals.
Performs daily, weekly,monthlyand annual paperwork duties, especiallywith regard topersonnel matters of direct subordinates.
Performs day-to-day security officer functions.
Patrols the hospital, hospital grounds and parking lots so as to maintain a safe and secure environment.
Initiates investigations into incidents or activities of criminal nature andsubmitsappropriate informationto law enforcement agencies as directed.
Assumes responsibility for proper inventory, pickup,transportand storage of patient valuables and after hour patient deposits.
Maintains storage and records of lost,foundand stolen property of visitors,patientsand employees.
Controls loud or disorderly patients or visitors and summons police toassistif necessary.
Providesaccuratedirections, information, and, if necessary,escortto the public.
Provides traffic control, as needed.
Operate required vehicle(s) in a safe manner to perform required duties of the position.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS :
Performs simple maintenance on parking lot equipment (i.e., clears personnel ticket dispensers, replaces broken gate arms).
Assistswith the movement of patients as requested by nursing staff.
Keeps Director advised of all personnel matters of appointed subordinates.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :
High school degree or GEDrequired.
Associates degree preferred.
2-3yearssecurity supervisory experience or related experience.
Valid Driver's/Chauffeurs Licenserequired, must meet Mercy's Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, must be at least 18 years of age and be eligible to drive per Iowa state law.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire.
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS : (Constant = 67-100% of workday, Frequent = 34-66% of workday, Occasional = 33% or less of workday)

Talking: Expressing ideasby means ofthe spoken word both in person and over radio to give and receive instructions and information.
Bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling : With some freedom to choose which position.
Climbing: To ascend stairs
Hearing : Receiving detailed information through oral communications both in person and over radio.
Running : Toaddress emergency situations.
Driving : Sittingwhile drivingvehicle.
Stooping : Bendingat the waist while getting into and out of vehicle.
Handling : Workingwith whole hand to drive vehicle,to load/unload supplies, materials into and from vehicle.
Reaching : Extendinghand(s) and arm(s) in any direction to load/unload and deliver materials/supplies into and from vehicle.
OCCASIONAL
Repetitive motions: Substantial motions of the wrists, hands and fingers while typing and filing.
Lifting: In excess of100 pounds while lifting patients/baggage/valuables.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS :
If a patient is unable to function independently, a mechanical/assistive device and/or additional personnel must be utilized. If an object requires lifting > 50 lbs., additional equipment/personnel must also be utilized.
Sedentary work : Exerting up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly. Sedentary work involves sitting.
Heavy work : Exerting up to 65 lbs. (push/pull force) to move frequently, and lifting up to 50 lbs. frequently , and lifting up to 40 lbs. frequently, and lifting up to 20 lbs. constantly, to move patient and/or objects.
VISUAL ACUITY REQUIREMENTS :
- Visual acuityrequiredto inspect premises and compile incident reports. Work involvesuseof computerterminal.
INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
Ability tomaintainsatisfactory job performance anda high standard ofbothcourtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, patients,and visitors despite the stress of a hospital work environment.
Ability to work with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
TOOLS/EQUIPMENT:
- Standard medical, nursing, special, or office equipment found in the assigned area.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The worker may be exposed to patients with possible communicable diseases.
The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Temperaturesoccasionallybelow 32 degrees and above 100 degrees.
The worker is subject to hazards such as moving mechanical parts,vehiclesand disruptive patients/visitors.
The worker is subject to noise while in certain areas of the hospital; i.e.,boilerroom.
Employees in this job classification have been identified as having the likelihood of occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, therefore, are included in the OSHA Exposure Control Plan with its specifications, for preventing contact with the above material.
