POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE New York University Tandon School of Engineering

The Maimon lab ( at NYU Tandon School of Engineering department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking to hire a Post Doctoral Associate to work in the area of neural stem cell biology, brain regeneration, neurodegeneration (specifically Huntington’s Disease) and neuro-engineering.

The mission of the department of Biomedical Engineering and particularly the Maimon lab (located in Manhattan) is to pioneer regenerative strategies for neurodegenerative diseases by unlocking the potential of in vivo cellular identity conversion. Through bold experimentation and interdisciplinary thinking, the Maimon lab explores how dormant neural stem cells can be reawakened and guided to form new glial and neurons, with the ultimate goal of inducing brain regeneration in aging and disease.

Expectations

Candidates will be responsible for leading and executing in vivo and ex vivo studies focused on gene editing–based approaches to treat neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Huntington’s Disease (HD), using mouse models. Responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments, performing behavioral and molecular phenotyping, and optimizing delivery and safety of CRISPR/Cas9-based tools.

In addition, candidates will contribute to the analysis of single-cell and spatial transcriptomics datasets, including MERFISH and spatial proteomics. Familiarity with computational pipelines for single-cell data integration and interpretation is highly valued. Expertise in advanced microscopy (e.g., confocal, spinning disk, live imaging) and imaging-based analysis of neural tissues is strongly preferred.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated background in CRISPR, as exemplified by a strong publication record. Previous experience with in vivo genome editing, AAV delivery systems, Antisense Oligonucleotides (ASOs), live cell imaging, neuronal co-cultures, neurodegeneration models, spatial omics, and computational biology is desired.

Salary: In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $62,500-$70,000 depending on the candidate’s experience and qualification.

Candidates should have a PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, microbiology, genomics, systems biology, bioengineering, evolutionary biology, ecology, biophysics, applied mathematics, or a related quantitative field. Strong programming skills in Python and/or R are required. Experience with the analysis of multi-omic datasets (e.g., metagenomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics) and familiarity with gut microbiome research are expected. Familiarity with constraint-based metabolic modeling (e.g., flux balance analysis) and/or machine learning is a plus. Strong written and oral communication skills, interdisciplinary curiosity, a collaborative spirit, and a demonstrated commitment to reproducible and open science are essential.

Candidates for the gut-brain axis track should have a strong background in behavioral neuroscience, neuroendocrinology, or enteric nervous system biology. Experience with gut–brain signaling pathways, including those mediated by microbial metabolites derived from the diet, such as short-chain fatty acids, branch-chain fatty acids, or protein fermentation byproducts, is a plus. Familiarity with non-human animal model systems (e.g., germ-free mouse studies, behavioral assays) or human behavioral studies (e.g., behavior assessed from wearables or questionnaires) is desired. An interest in bridging mechanistic findings with translational human cohort and clinical intervention data is strongly valued.
