Phlebotomist

Job Title: Phlebotomist Location: Danville VA Medical Center, 1900 East Main Street, Danville, IL 61832-5100 Compensation: $23.00 per hour + 5.09 for Health and Wellness Shift Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., alternating tours. Overtime on an as‑needed basis. Position Description: We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Phlebotomist to perform blood collection and provide essential support to our laboratory. This role requires a deep understanding of clinical science, venipuncture techniques, patient preparation, and specimen handling. The Phlebotomist will work closely with patients, laboratory staff, and other medical personnel to ensure accurate collection, handling, and transportation of specimens, while also providing excellent customer service. Primary Responsibilities: Perform blood collection requiring knowledge of clinical science to understand the multiplicity of tests and specimen requirements, the mechanics of venipuncture and patient preparation. Perform phlebotomy to obtain patient specimens for laboratory testing including blood cultures and compatibility samples. Accession and receive samples into VA laboratory information system package for in‑house testing or send‑outs to reference laboratories. Instruct patients in proper collection of 24‑hour urine and other samples collected at home. Prepare collection, measure, and record 24‑hour urine volumes. Transport specimens to the laboratory including those requiring special handling. Look up laboratory order numbers and patient information for outpatient draws. Use numbering system to check patients into the laboratory. Answer phone and direct calls to other laboratory sections. Establish and maintain effective interpersonal skills and good customer relations with Patients, Families, and all other Medical Center Employees. Provide general clerical and administrative support for the area. Stock and maintain specialized supplies used in the drawing area.
