The HIV Neurobehavioral Research Program (HNRP)-Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR) provides broad scientific and programmatic leadership for multi-disciplinary research programs related to HIV or cannabis or both. As part of its leadership role, the HNRP-CMCR stimulates and helps coordinate interdisciplinary collaborative research at the local, regional, national, and international levels, and also serves as a resource for consultation, training and career development for investigators working in HIV/AIDS, cannabis and associated issues.

Under general supervision, the Care Coordinator will independently provide support to people with HIV (PWH) with and without methamphetamine use disorder who are electing to start long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy (LAI-ART) at the UCSD Owen Clinic, and they will coordinate recruitment and retention into the Brain-FRAMe study. This position will provide coordination of care in support of the Brain-FRAMe research study. Working within the Participant Accrual and Retention (PAR) unit of the HNRP-CMCR, the Care Coordinator will serve as a liaison between the clinic, the patient, and the research study team. They will text and call participants (e.g., with reminders), accompany participants to study visits, connect patients to existing psychosocial support services (such as transportation to clinic visits), etc. The Care Coordinator will keep track of the nature of their interactions with participants (i.e., what they did for the patient) and the time devoted to participants (i.e., how much time did they spend in coordination activities with the participant). They will also coordinate the completion of web-based surveys for providers/staff and patients, record attendance and assessments at workforce education events, keep notes on implementation team meetings, and participate in the collation and organization of data. These duties include: screening, enrolling, and scheduling new participants in studies; interviewing new participants and gathering research data for analysis; presenting data to case conference team; tracking enrollment milestones and evaluating barriers to enrollment; making public presentations to educate and recruit research study participants; and initiating and maintaining regular contact with members of the local community including those serving individuals with HIV, mental health disorders, and substance use. Assist with other project and miscellaneous duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

• Six years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus two years of related experience/training.
• Two or more years of experience in a research setting providing outreach and education and performing screening interviews for health research studies.
• Familiarity with IRB guidelines related to human subjects research including obtaining informed consent, proper collection and documentation of study data and participant interactions.
• Familiarity with San Diego health clinics, hospices, and human service organizations that provide HIV, HCV and/or substance abuse care and service and demonstrated ability to provide referrals to these organizations.
• Ability to deal with confidential matters with tact and diplomacy
• Solid written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
• Familiarity with the issues of target communities, including people living with HIV, people recovering from substance abuse, ethnic and cultural minorities, older adults (55 and over), and the LGBTQ+ community.
• Solid Knowledge of Microsoft Windows software such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Demonstrated experience providing health education or other complex information to individuals with lower education and/or cognitive impairment.
• Ability to analyze data and develop reports.
• Ability to work collaboratively, secure cooperation and facilitate partnerships.
• Demonstrated experience working within multidisciplinary clinical and research teams.
• Solid organizational, planning and time management skills.
• Ability to identify and cultivate potential partnerships with professional organizations.
• Ability to document and track implementation-related activities with high attention to detail.
• Knowledge of health or social services and outreach practices.
• Familiarity with the EHR (Epic), REDCap, and research tracking databases.
• Solid analytical and problem solving skills.
• Ability to deliver educational presentations to diverse groups.
• Experience with motivational interviewing or motivational enhancement-informed communication strategies.
• Ability to manage longitudinal participant follow-up and retention activities in complex clinical populations.
• Familiarity with implementation science concepts including fidelity, adoption, retention, and workflow integration.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to communicate (oral and written) in Spanish.
