About the Position

The Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health Therapist provides comprehensive behavioral health services to children from prenatal through age 6 and their families. The therapist works with families who require a high level of community-based care and provides services based on each family's unique needs. Services may be delivered in the family's home, within the community, or through telehealth. The position reports to the assigned Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health Supervisor within the Specialized Services for Youth department.

  • Provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and individual, family, and group therapy.
  • Maintain a typical caseload of approximately 10–15 children and families, depending on clinical severity and program needs.
  • Provide a minimum of 6 hours of direct face-to-face contact per month with each youth and/or family, as required.
  • Provide home-based and community-based services that address the needs of the whole family.
  • Assess family dynamics and circumstances that may affect the child's well-being and treatment.
  • Develop individualized goals and treatment plans, monitor progress, and adjust interventions as needed.
  • Use evidence-based practices and interventions appropriate to each child's and family's needs.
  • Empower children and families to participate actively in their treatment and advocate for themselves.
  • Connect families with resources addressing social determinants of health, including physical health, education, employment, finances, social needs, and cultural considerations.
  • Coordinate care with treatment teams, psychiatric providers, schools and daycares, physicians, protective services, respite providers, Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN), and other community partners.
  • Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation in the electronic medical record in accordance with agency, licensing, accreditation, OCHN, and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) requirements.
  • Participate in ongoing clinical supervision, reflective supervision, department meetings, trainings, and specialized supervision groups.
  • Participate in professional development related to evidence-based practices, clinical interventions, licensure, and the needs of the assigned caseload.
  • Participate in SSY crisis on-call coverage for approximately 3–4 weeks per year.
  • Participate in SSY check-in coverage for approximately 3–4 weekends per year.
  • Provide approximately 1.5–2 hours of reflective supervision per month; therapists working toward MI-AIMH Endorsement Level II participate in weekly reflective supervision.
  • Work a minimum of two evenings per week to accommodate the schedules of children and families.
  • Additional responsibilities may include conducting intakes, supervising interns, participating in special projects or contracts, providing leadership to educational or counseling groups, supporting community initiatives, and other duties as assigned. 

Administrative

  • Manage assigned caseloads efficiently and effectively.
  • Complete all documentation and administrative responsibilities within required timelines.
  • Maintain compliance with OCHN, MDHHS, Medicaid, agency, licensing, and program requirements.
  • Use the electronic health record and other agency systems effectively.
  • Provide consultation, support, teaching, and leadership to colleagues when appropriate.
  • Help coordinate program activities when assigned.
  • Incorporate diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and cultural responsiveness into all aspects of the work.
  • Promote a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment for clients, families, and staff.

Does This Describe You?
  • Master's degree from an accredited school of social work or a related field such as psychology, social work, guidance, or counseling, as appropriate to the position.
  • Current Michigan certification or licensure appropriate to education and experience, such as: LLMSW / LMSW, LLPC / LPC, TLLP / LLP, LLMFT / LMFT
  • At least one year of experience evaluating and treating minors and their families, either before or after completing a master's degree.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population and demonstrate cultural sensitivity and responsiveness.
  • Experience working with children ages 0–6.
  • Infant Mental Health Specialist Endorsement through the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health (MI-AIMH), or willingness to pursue endorsement.
  • Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) certification.
  • Experience within the Community Mental Health system.
  • Experience working with children and youth experiencing serious emotional disturbances.
  • Family systems experience.
  • Trauma-informed care experience.
  • Experience providing home-based services.
  • Experience using evidence-based treatment models.
  • Substance use disorder-related qualifications or experience.
