Job Title: Maintenance Mechanic Job Description

The Maintenance Mechanic regularly inspects, services, and repairs extensive conveyor systems, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable operation across a large facility. This role focuses on preventive maintenance, mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, and the rebuilding and installation of conveyor components and related equipment.

• Inspect major conveyor systems on a regular basis to determine the need for repairs, parts, materials, and the time required to complete work.
• Perform preventive maintenance, cleaning, lubrication, and detailed troubleshooting on conveyor systems to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
• Disassemble, adjust, repair, reset, replace, and rebuild conveyor system components including belts (V, flat, curved, wide), guides, bearings, rollers, pulleys, supports, chains, motors, gearboxes, valves, and pumps.
• Interpret and apply information from technical manuals, shop directives, multi-view blueprints, and other technical documents to identify critical dimensions, correct parts, key reference points, and electrical power requirements.
• Independently dismantle, move, and relocate various conveyor systems and components, and install new machinery, equipment, and electrical power supplies as needed.
• Anchor conveyor machinery to foundations and assemble and connect accessory or auxiliary components such as ladders, platforms, and guard rails.
• Make precision alignments and adjustments to conveyor systems to ensure proper balance and operation, followed by thorough operational testing of the entire system.
• Troubleshoot and maintain electrical circuits and components, including photo eyes, relays, proximity sensors, solenoids, electric motors, motor control starters, overloads, contactors, encoders, soft starts, variable frequency drives (VFDs), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and control circuitry from 5VDC to 480VAC 3-phase.
• Perform off-shift preventive maintenance while conveyors are shut down, including visual inspections, servicing, and repairs.
• Address and repair issues identified during day-shift operations to ensure equipment is ready for the next production cycle.
• Complete common work orders such as replacing motors, rollers, chains, and belts on conveyor systems.
• Run conveyors empty after maintenance and repairs to verify proper operation and identify any remaining issues.
• Use appropriate hand tools and maintenance equipment safely and effectively during mechanical and electrical repair tasks.

• Proven ability to perform preventive maintenance, cleaning, lubrication, and troubleshooting on large conveyor systems.
• Strong mechanical skills in disassembling, repairing, rebuilding, and reinstalling conveyor components such as belts, rollers, bearings, shafts, pulleys, chains, motors, gearboxes, valves, and pumps.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical manuals, shop directives, multi-view blueprints, and other technical documents to guide repairs and installations.
• Experience working with and maintaining a wide range of conveyor types, including pop rollers, flat belts, cone rollers, poly belts, and chain-driven systems.
• Demonstrated proficiency in troubleshooting and maintaining electrical circuits and components, including photo eyes, relays, proximity sensors, solenoids, electric motors, motor control starters, overloads, contactors, encoders, soft starts, VFDs, PLCs, and control circuitry.
• Comfort working with electrical systems from low-voltage control circuits (around 5VDC) up to 480VAC 3-phase power.
• Ability to replace and align 3-phase motors and other electrical-mechanical components safely and accurately.
• Skilled in using hand tools and maintenance tools for mechanical and electrical repair work.
• Capability to perform visual inspections and identify wear, damage, or potential failures on conveyor systems and components.
• Physical ability to work in a large facility environment, including walking or riding between work areas and climbing stairs to access conveyor lines.

• Experience working with extensive conveyor systems over long distances is beneficial.
• Background in both electrical and mechanical repair in an industrial or distribution environment is an advantage.
• Familiarity with off-shift or non-standard hours for preventive maintenance work is helpful.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple maintenance tasks.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety when working around moving machinery and high-voltage equipment.

This role offers the opportunity to work with complex, large-scale material handling systems in a dynamic industrial environment, where your technical skills directly support smooth operations and reliability. The work takes place in a large, non-climate-controlled facility that can be cold in the winter and warm in the summer. You will move throughout the building using carts and three-wheel bikes to reach various conveyor lines and equipment. The role involves regularly going up and down stairs to access different levels of conveyor systems. Work is performed primarily during off-shift hours when conveyors are shut down for preventive maintenance, allowing safe access for inspections, servicing, and repairs. Attire should be appropriate for an industrial environment and variable temperatures, with suitable personal protective equipment as required.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newport News, VA.

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $24.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
