Instructional Lab Technician II - Chemistry

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Under the general supervision of a Dean, and under the work direction of an Instructor, an Instructional Lab Technician II - Chemistry performs complex technical work related to chemistry; oversees the operation and maintenance of a highly technical or complex instructional laboratory, including maintaining supplies, preparing laboratory equipment, reagents, and chemicals for class demonstrations and experiments.

There is currently one full-time ((12 months/year, 40 hours/week)) vacancy located at Oxnard College, pending board approval.

This recruitment is being conducted to establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill district-wide, current and upcoming, non-bilingual and bilingual, temporary and regular vacancies for the duration of the list, not to exceed one year.

Oxnard College was founded in 1975 and is the newest of the three community colleges in the county. Set on 118 acres and located two miles from Pacific Ocean beaches, the college is easily accessible by the Ventura Freeway (Highway 101) or the Pacific Coast Highway.

SALARY PLACEMENT

New Employees: Generally, new employees are placed on the first step of the appropriate range of the salary schedule.

Current Employees: An employee who is promoted will be placed on the salary step of the new range of the appropriate salary schedule that provides a minimum increase comparable to a one-step increase in salary. New and current employees may be eligible for advanced step placement as outlined in Section 290 – SALARY PLAN in the Rules of the Personnel Commission for Classified Employees.

Prepare and set up laboratory equipment, reagents, chemicals and other teaching aids for class demonstrations and experiments.

Order, receive, inspect and inventory materials, chemicals, and laboratory equipment; assure adequate quantities are available for instructional use.

Maintain stock rooms, laboratories and other assigned areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition; encourage awareness of and oversee the proper use of facilities and safe practices.

Prepare, label and maintain adequate quantities of stock solutions and reagents.

Prepare chemical solutions and unknowns for laboratory demonstrations, practical examinations and general instruction; arrange for proper storage and disposal of toxic, caustic or flammable chemicals.

Prepare and issue materials and equipment for student use; monitor and maintain records of materials and equipment on loan to or checked out by students and instructors.

Maintain a variety of files and records regarding instructional materials, inventories, purchase orders and equipment repairs; organize, prepare and maintain laboratory procedures manuals; perform general clerical duties as needed.

Test, adjust, maintain and perform minor repairs including necessary calibrations to apparatus and equipment; send equipment out for major repairs.

Assign and maintain records of student lockers; equip lockers with proper equipment and supplies.

Assist in preparation of the preliminary laboratory budget; project estimated needs, supplies and requests; monitor budget expenditures.

Use and operate a variety of technical equipment and measuring devices including burets, volumetric glassware, pH meters, chromatograph, analytical balance, voltmeter, and spectrophotometer.

Screen, select, train, evaluate and provide work direction for student workers.

Work collaboratively and professionally with faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, and ethnic communities.

Demonstrate cultural humility, sensitivity, and equity-mindedness in working with individuals from diverse communities; model inclusive behaviors; and achieve equity in assignment-related outcomes.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Any combination equivalent to: A bachelor's degree in chemistry and two years of work experience in a field of specialty, preferably in an instructional setting.

EXAMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS

The examination process may consist of any of the following components:

A) Training and Experience Evaluation = Qualifying (pass/fail)

B) Technical Interview = 100% weighting on final score

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (T&E) EVALUATION

A T&E is an assessment of training and experience, beyond the minimum requirements, that has prepared the candidate for the position as evidenced in the application materials. Please be sure to answer every component of each supplemental question as your responses will be scored and serve as your score on the training and experience (T&E) evaluation.

The candidates with the highest passing scores on the T&E will be invited to the technical interview.

Location: The Technical Interview will be conducted remotely, using Zoom. To participate, you must have access to a computer with a camera, microphone, speakers, and a reliable connection to the internet.
