Volunteer Firefighter

Lumpkin County, Georgia

JOB SUMMARY

The Volunteer Firefighter performs a variety of emergencyoperations to protect lives and property in simultaneous fire suppression,search and rescue, and assures that all Fire related equipment remains ready atall times to respond to emergency and non-emergency situations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Responds to all emergencycalls for life threatening situations;fights fires and perform search and rescue; implements all actions necessary to save lives and property; assists with emergency medical treatment and patient care.
• Assistsin maintaining scene to correct life-threatening situations and/or extricatepatients.
• Maintains basic life-support equipment, fire equipment and apparatus; assures all equipment is functioning properly; reports any equipment malfunction ormissing supplies immediately to the Officer in Charge or Quartermaster.
• Participates in continuing study, training, and drill activity toachieve Certification and tomaintain required skills to assure adequate health and physical strength.
• Keepsstation grounds clean and neat;cuts grass, paints where needed,washes and scrubs floors, etc.
• Attends training classes to gain familiarity with geographyof the area; learns roads and alternative routes to populated areas; learns fire hydrant locations.
• May assist with public relations duties, and assist with instruction for various groupson fire safety and prevention techniques; learns how to deal with publicand present effective programs.
• LCES VolunteerFirefighters are required to respond to any or all emergency calls forfire suppression, search and rescueas first-line firefighters.
• May drive a Rescue Vehicle and upon completion of training, afire apparatus.
• Performs other related dutiesas required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Educationand Experience:
• Requires a High School diploma or equivalent and zero (0) yearsof related experience, or an equivalent combination of education andexperience.


Licenses or Certifications:
• NPQFirefighter 1 to be obtained within 1 year
• Basic Life SupportCertification (BLS) to be obtained within 1 year.
• Valid Georgia Driver'sLicense and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
• EMR or EMTB preferred.
• Volunteersare required to meet the LCES and State annual training requirements as well asthe department duty requirements.

Special Requirements:
• Must meet allin-house testing requirements.
• Applicantmust pass a background check and drug screening
• Mustreside inside Lumpkin County or within the prescribed limits.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of county and department rules, regulations, policies, andprocedures.
• Knowledge of county geography, water systems, streets, and buildings.
• Knowledge of hazardous materials.
• Knowledge of first-aid principles and applications.
• Knowledge of fire apparatus and maintenance requirements.
• Skill in operating fire suppression equipment.
• Skill in interpersonal relations.
• Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines ormulti-line telephone systems.
• Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/oraccounting purposes.
• Ability to organize and communicate effectively.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships andcommunicate effectively with citizens, the general public, and other employees.

PHYSICALDEMANDS

The work is very heavy and requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds offorce occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or inexcess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work also requiresbalancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping,handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing,reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visualacuity, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is typically performed in a dynamic environment that has changinggoals, priorities and needs. Work involves crisis situations that require thisposition to make major decisions involving people, resources, andproperty. Work performed is often done in inclement weather and underhazardous conditions and can be very strenuous.
