Registered Nurse Manager - Medical/Surgical

Overview At Houston Methodist, the Manager Nursing position is responsible for 24‑hour comprehensive operational responsibility for the delivery and quality of patient care provided in the designated areas of responsibility. This registered nurse position fosters interdepartmental/interprofessional collaboration, participates in committees, represents the unit and nursing in a positive manner, and develops and implements performance initiatives that ensure optimal patient safety, outcomes, and customer satisfaction. The role demonstrates leadership qualities and critical thinking through self‑direction, initiative, effective interpersonal skills, and oral/written communication skills. FLSA Status Exempt Responsibilities Manage daily work activities of unit/department staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency. Provide guidance, staffing, budget compliance, hiring/termination, coaching and counseling, and develop/implement policies and procedures that ensure a safe and effective work environment. Implement training, monitoring, and operations initiatives to secure compliance with ethical and legal business practices and regulatory requirements. Facilitate interdepartmental collaboration and serve as a positive representative in committees. Participate in performance initiatives to improve patient safety, outcomes, and customer satisfaction. Lead through effective communication, active listening, and equitable decision making with staff, patients, families, and the interprofessional team. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing. Experience: Three years’ experience in nursing, one year in a progressive leadership role in healthcare; for internal Houston Methodist, two years in nursing including leadership responsibilities such as charge nurse. Licenses & Certifications Required: RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure (Texas Board of Nursing_PSV Compact Licensure). Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency. BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA). Magnet - ANCC Recognized Certification within 1 year. Preferred: ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) as required by department. NIHSTROKE - National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) as required by department. NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) as required by department. Conduct regular department meetings, performance appraisals, new‑hire feedback, coaching, and recognition. Facilitate team dynamics, teambuilding, and process improvements across departments. Meet or exceed goals for employee engagement indicators. Coach staff in communication and stress‑management practices. Service Essential Functions Plan and organize day‑to‑day operations, setting priorities and functional standards. Drive service standards to impact patient/customer satisfaction scores. Act as a voice for the department on committees and resolve concerns with patients, families, physicians, and team members. Maintain ongoing interactions to improve patient care and services. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Ensure a safe working environment, monitor and revise safety plans, and confirm staff credentials. Optimize information systems to enhance operations and support data analysis. Proactively improve workflow, monitor near‑misses, adopt lean principles, and model situational awareness. Enforce compliance with policies, procedures, and HR standards; perform corrective actions as needed. Prepare measurable goals aligned with Houston Methodist priorities and develop action plans. Finance Essential Functions Assist in department budgeting, ensuring cost‑effective operations and compliance with monthly/annual targets. Manage and audit expenses within approved budgets; optimize productivity, supply/resource efficiency, and minimize overtime. Plan staffing and coverage to maximize management presence and staff efficiency. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Identify and implement innovative solutions; lead unit projects and shared governance activities. Evaluate processes, recommend and implement action plans for sustainable change. Build strategic relationships across areas to achieve business goals. Support self and staff development through career discussions and IDP updates.
