Summary

We are seeking an experienced Accountant to join our Finance team. This role is essential to the Finance team and offers broad exposure to nonprofit accounting.

This position is responsible for core general ledger accounting functions, with a strong focus on daily accounting activities related to museum operating revenue, donations, balance sheet reconciliations, and month-end close processes.

Familiarity with accurate revenue classification, including unrestricted and restricted contributions, is beneficial to ensure proper financial reporting and compliance. The Accountant helps ensure the accuracy and integrity of the museums financial records and works closely with the Finance team to support timely and compliant financial reporting.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and comfortable collaborating across departments to gather the information needed for accurate accounting and reporting.

  • Properly record and reconcile daily cash receipts from museum admissions, retail activity, and donations
  • Ensure accurate classification of revenue, including unrestricted and restricted contributions
  • Prepare and post journal entries in accordance with GAAP and internal accounting policies
  • Perform monthly balance sheet account reconciliations, including cash, receivables, deferred revenue, and other assigned accounts
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner
  • Maintain clear reconciliation schedules and supporting documentation
  • Serve as backup for Accounts Payable functions, including invoice entry, review, and vendor payments
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes
  • Support audit preparation by providing schedules, reconciliations, and documentation as requested
  • Support the Controller with a variety of finance-related projects
  • Collaborate with Development, Admissions, and Operations teams to ensure accurate financial data flow
  • Work within various accounting and operational systems to ensure data accuracy
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and reconciliation procedures
  • Serves as a backup for Accounts Payable, assisting with invoice processing and vendor payments as needed.

Education and Experience

  • A bachelors degree in accounting or a related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and progressively responsible accounting experience demonstrating a strong foundation in accounting principles will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 23 years of accounting experience performing the core responsibilities and functions outlined for this role
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting and MIP or similar fund accounting software is preferred
  • Hands-on experience with general ledger accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, and month-end close procedures
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting principles and internal controls
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills, with the ability to effectively prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft applications, and experience working efficiently in cloud-based environments
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to prioritize work and see tasks through to completion
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously while remaining flexible, adaptable, and effective under pressure as a collaborative team member
