Mid-Level Manager, Financial Counseling

This position functions as a mid-level manager with daily operational responsibilities for all aspects of Financial Counseling including staff oversight and daily operational processes to include financial assistance and Medicaid eligibility screening, insurance premium, copayment, and grant fund assistance, patient estimates, patient liability upfront collections, payment plans, collection of outstanding patient liability, and patient billing statement inquiries. These activities are for all Shared Service entities within UNC Health Care System. Additionally, the Supervisor is responsible for ensuring processes are conducted efficiently and in a high quality manner to meet financial goals and adhere to compliant billing and collections regulations.
This role is mostly remote.
Responsibilities include educating assigned clinical departments on Financial Counseling operations, providing consultation services to clinic departments related to improved revenues, advocating for patient and customer satisfaction, providing general guidance to staff on Financial Counseling protocols, independently or in collaboration with other teams developing and implementing procedures to optimize revenue generation, managing team projects and participating on intra-departmental projects, leading or serving on recurring task force teams, project workgroups, special projects, and Patient Access leadership meetings, developing and implementing process improvement plans, managing Patient Access as it relates to all aspects of Financial Counseling for HCS Shared Services facilities, ensuring that all financial counseling related issues are reviewed, researched, and resolved, participating in staff recruitment, hiring and orientation, selecting and appraising employees, conducting performance evaluations and employee discipline in accordance with UNCHCS policies and procedures, ensuring staff is appropriately trained, collaborating with management to perform routine and ad hoc analyses, audits, reporting, and workflow studies as required to ensure revenue optimization, analyzing findings and presenting to clinic department and management, providing input to department budget process and monitoring to ensure fiscal accountability, collaborating with management to establish and monitor department goals, metrics, and established productivity measures, serving as Patient Access Financial Counseling liaison for all HCS Shared Service owned and managed hospitals and all physician groups related to HB and PB functions, developing and maintaining strong working relationship to educate other facilities across all Shared Service facilities on financial counseling operations, supervising the operations of a cross-disciplinary team for assigned areas in accordance with established standards and procedures, providing direction and oversight to subordinates, ensuring staff complies with relevant regulations, policies and certifications, maintaining employee schedules and attendance records.
Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree in a related field (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience). Licensure/Certification Requirements: No licensure or certification required. Professional Experience Requirements: If a Bachelor's Degree: Two (2) years of relevant experience and one (1) year of supervisory experience. If an Associate's Degree: Three (4) years of relevant experience and one (1) year of supervisory experience. If a High School Diploma or GED: Seven (7) years of relevant experience and one (1) year of supervisory experience. Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: Strong customer service skills/experience, proficient in time management with superior prioritization skills, self-motivated and detail oriented with strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to professionally present information, understanding of overall hospital revenue cycle functions.
