Job Overview:

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities:

Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, perform decontamination, and update patient information.
Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
Properly explain in a clear and courteous manner the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections such as urine or fecal samples.
Demonstrate collection techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
Fully understand all physician orders.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure complete accuracy.
Package specimens for transport.
Store specimen samples according to required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately label, and follow specific protocols required for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, and attend annual department trainings.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Qualifications:

Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required.
Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
High School Diploma or GED.
