Organizing Director
$101.3kHousing Rights Committee Of San Francisco
About the Organization HRCSF is a tenants’ rights non‑profit serving tenants citywide since 1979, offering free counseling and organizing support for San Francisco tenants in all types of housing, including rent‑control, public housing, and Section8. Our purpose is to strengthen tenants’ rights, improve living conditions for renters, and preserve and expand affordable housing opportunities. Through our counseling program, we support more than 5,000 tenants a year, and our organizing program has helped build five tenant associations across the city since 2019. Position Summary The Organizing Director provides department‑wide leadership to HRCSF’s tenant organizing department and supervises the organizing team as they support working‑class tenants across San Francisco to build strong tenant associations capable of taking collective action to improve conditions in their buildings, defend their homes, and advance tenant rights. Working closely with organizers, tenant leaders, and partner organizations, the Organizing Director helps shape the strategic direction of tenant campaigns, ensuring organizing work builds durable tenant leadership. The Organizing Director also works with the Executive Director and Directors Team to connect building‑level organizing with broader policy fights, budget advocacy, and coalition campaigns that advance tenant protections locally and across California. This role ensures the organizing program operates with strategic clarity, strong staff support, and alignment with HRCSF’s broader organizational priorities and movement partnerships. Essential Functions Provide department‑level leadership for HRCSF’s tenant organizing program through supervision, coaching, and strategic campaign guidance, ensuring organizers build strong tenant associations, develop tenant leadership, and win improvements in housing conditions and tenant protections. Connect tenant organizing work with broader policy, advocacy, and coalition efforts by ensuring building‑level organizing informs participation in policy fights, budget advocacy, and movement strategy, and by building and maintaining relationships with housing justice organizations, tenant groups, and coalition partners. Serve as an engaged member of the Director Team by contributing to organizational strengthening, cross‑departmental coordination, and aligning organizing work with HRCSF’s strategic priorities and infrastructure, and by supporting program reporting, fundraising, and grant compliance to ensure accurate documentation of outreach, participation, and campaign outcomes. Other administrative and organizational tasks as needed — such as attending internal meetings and training and supporting organizational events when necessary. Knowledge, Skill and Experience Required Qualifications Demonstrated commitment to social, housing, economic and racial justice. At least 3 years of experience in organizing or campaign leadership within a labor or housing justice context. At least 3 years of experience supervising staff, mentoring teams, and supporting staff development. Strong analytical skills, including the ability to assess shifting socio‑political, economic conditions. Demonstrated leadership skills with a track record of successfully driving projects, campaigns, or organizational initiatives. Strong program development, administration, implementation and project management skills. Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Proficiency with workplace tools such as Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, and the ability to learn new systems as needed. Preferred Qualifications Experience leading building‑based, tenant association organizing, union organizing or any other kind of majority‑building and campaign escalation. Familiarity with San Francisco housing policy, tenant protections, and local political landscape. Experience with nonprofit program management, including grant reporting, fundraising, and compliance. Experience supporting cross‑departmental collaboration in a nonprofit or movement organization. Benefits This position is a full‑time exempt position with a current salary of $101,300. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage (including chiropractic and acupuncture), generous paid vacation and sick time, and a supportive work environment that centers individual and collective care to ensure sustainability and longevity. Equal Opportunity Statement HRCSF is an equal opportunity employer: People of color, women, immigrants, LGBTQI2S, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Diverse viewpoints are vital to our organization’s mission and culture. Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records. #J-18808-Ljbffr
