OPTOMETRIST (NON-COMPETITIVE)

Optometrist
Positions allocable to this class typically work in an eye clinic under the general direction of an ophthalmologist, examining and diagnosing an independent patient load. Optometrists are involved in the prevention and diagnosis of disorders and dysfunctions of the visual system, and the treatment and management of certain disorders and dysfunctions of the visual system, as well as the provision of rehabilitative optometric services, and performing duties including, but not limited to, the examination of the human eye or eyes. Incumbents are expected to properly use tools, materials, and equipment of the profession and use therapeutic pharmaceutical agents, diagnose and treat specified conditions, and perform a range of procedures. Optometrists are required to coordinate with and refer to a physician and surgeon when a situation or condition occurs that is beyond the Optometrist's scope of practice.
