CENTRAL REGISTRY – DATA SPECIALIST

Missouri Cancer Registry & Research Center Department of Public Health College of Health Sciences University of Missouri - Columbia Job Description Assist with registry operations by monitoring, managing and/or abstracting cases from various sources, including circuit-riding hospitals and/or non-hospital facilities (e.g., long-term care facilities, physician offices, ambulatory care centers, pathology labs, etc.) to ensure that the data submitted to the Missouri Cancer Registry meets Missouri statute requirements and national standards for quality, timeliness and completeness as set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). Some staff in this position will develop publications and maintain website to promote cancer reporting. Job Responsibilities Monitor reporting of cancer incidence cases by Missouri hospitals and/or other reporting facilities as mandated by the State (192.650-192.657 RSMo), including cases submitted via Web Plus, the CDC’s web-based physician reporting software. Identify non-compliant reporting facilities and make recommendations to supervisor regarding appropriate action(s). Be responsible for case-finding assignments for non-hospital facilities, including long-term care facilities, 50+ pathology laboratories, 15 freestanding radiation facilities, 200-300 physicians, 100 ambulatory surgery centers and approximately 25 freestanding oncology clinics. This includes identifying cases eligible for inclusion into the central cancer registry through detailed review of medical records submitted these non-hospital facilities, following back to facility or physician when necessary and dispositioning each case. Be responsible for detailed review of medical records submitted by low volume or circuit-riding facilities to identify cases eligible for inclusion into the central cancer registry. Abstract information from patient records submitted by circuit-riding and/or non-hospital facilities into computerized databases (e.g. Web Plus) according to standardized coding rules; maintain quality standards in the performance of all work assignments. Serve as primary contact for circuit-riding facilities, non-hospital facilities and physicians throughout Missouri for additional information to ensure complete and accurate reporting. Maintain necessary databases to track receipt of data from circuit-riding and/or non-hospital reporting facilities. Participate in specialized activities as needed. Assist with the development of training aids for long-term care facilities and other non-hospital cancer reporters as needed. Stay current with industry standards by attending national, regional and/or state meetings and workshops. Develop and maintain computer skills necessary to perform job functions Shift Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm Minimum Qualifications Associates degree with college-level courses in Human Anatomy and/or Physiology and medical terminology or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired is necessary. Minimum two years experience in medical records, nursing, or related area. Fully competent to utilize computerized word processing and spreadsheet programs. Proven communication and persuasion skills needed to successfully interact with medical professionals to gain their active support and completion of needed records and information requests. Specialized training in developing websites is necessary for some positions within this classification. Preferred Qualifications Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential or CTR-eligible preferred. Anticipated Hiring Range This position is grant funded. Employment is contingent upon available grant funding.
