Retail Clinical Staff Pharmacist

Job Overview Clinical pharmacists (CP) work closely with other health practitioners to review and approve medication orders, monitor drug therapies, and provide drug information. The role improves patient health by delivering pharmaceutical care, serving as a resource to physicians and nurses, educating students, interns, residents, nurses, and patients, and participating in drug therapy research. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy Pharmacist License One year of related experience Preferred Qualifications Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Pharmacy Residency training Duties and Responsibilities Direct and coordinate the clinical activities of the assigned pharmacy service area; prepare, compound, and dispense medications in accordance with state and federal laws. Review and accurately interpret physician’s orders for appropriateness of indication, clarity, dose accuracy, drug allergies, interactions, and duplication. Contact and confer with physicians regarding any questions or irregularities regarding medication orders. Ensure medication is accurately prepared and labeled with all necessary and appropriate information; supervise support staff during shifts. Provide accurate, appropriate and timely drug information using pharmacological knowledge and scientific literature. Conduct medication history interviews, reconcile patient medication therapies, and provide drug information to patients and families. Anticipate controlled drug needs for each patient care area based on Controlled Drug Disposition Records. Complete medication station inspections with Pharmacy Assistants or as a Pharmacist. Participate in medication education, discussing medications with patients and documenting in progress notes. Perform order entry and use all Registered Pharmacist functions of the Pharmacy computer system accurately and efficiently. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, review discharge medication lists, improve medication reconciliation processes, and provide medication optimization consults. Conduct home visits to review medications and provide education such as inhaler teaching. Participate in Pharmacy Quality Programs related to clinical excellence, operational excellence, financial performance, safety, and research. Collaborate with other pharmacists for operational support and provide weekend, holiday, evening, night, and on‑call coverage as described in departmental policies. Provide continuing education for clinical staff; serve as preceptor for pharmacy students, interns, and residents. Participate in the development and implementation of treatment guidelines, protocols, and clinical pathways. Participate in the development of departmental drug‑specific and population‑specific initiatives. Physical Requirements Frequent standing and walking, lifting 5–10 lbs. May be required to lift and carry light loads, including boxes or equipment, and stoop or kneel. Requires manual dexterity for prescription medication manipulation and computer keyboard use. Requires ability to see medications, computer screens, and reports. Skills & Abilities Knowledge of pharmacy laws, regulations, and professional standards; maintain departmental inventory for controlled drugs. Superior verbal and written presentation skills. Superior communication skills, including giving presentations to one‑on‑one and group audiences. Knowledge of integrated health networks and health plan drug formularies. Project and resource management skills. Creative thinking and problem‑solving skills. Understanding of confidentiality and privacy of patient information. Knowledge of clinical best practices for optimizing medication use. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word). Ability to work with all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, and life experiences. Robust understanding of chronic health condition and population management. Proficiency in Motivational Interviewing. Ability to prioritize and resolve critical issues efficiently. Detail oriented with strong organizational and multitasking skills. Strong working knowledge of technology and business software. Experience with Electronic Medical Records. Willingness to learn and utilize new technologies and procedures. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
