As a Non-RBT Intern, you'll gain valuable hands-on experience in the field of ABA while working alongside experienced clinical professionals and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs).

RBTs work 1:1 with patients and implement individualized ABA therapy programs developed as part of each patient's treatment plan. As a Non-RBT Intern, you'll have the opportunity to observe, learn, and participate in the implementation of ABA therapy, while also supporting a variety of clinical, administrative, and team-based activities.

This is a great opportunity for someone who is interested in autism services, behavioral health, education, psychology, social work, or a related field and wants to gain real-world experience in a clinical setting.

What You'll Do

As a Non-RBT Intern, you'll receive training and/or observe the implementation of ABA therapy with patients. Depending on your training, experience, and assigned responsibilities, you may:

• Observe and participate in the implementation of ABA therapy programs as prescribed by each patient's treatment plan.
• Learn and apply teaching strategies such as discrete trial training, errorless learning, error correction, Natural Environment Teaching (NET), incidental teaching, and other individualized strategies.
• Observe and learn appropriate behavior management techniques, including physical management procedures used in response to aggressive or unsafe behavior when necessary.
• Follow prescribed reinforcement schedules and use reinforcement appropriately.
• Help keep patients safe while treating each patient with dignity, compassion, and respect.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs).
• Complete data collection as directed.
• Provide breaks and support to RBTs.
• Create and organize programming materials and supplies.
• Facilitate small-group instruction.
• Assist with community outings.
• Support established diet, supplementation, and medication protocols according to parent instructions and LittleStar procedures.
• Complete client billing and other documentation as directed.
• Maintain accurate and timely Home Notes.
• Complete required paperwork, including time clock exception forms, incident reports, mileage reimbursement forms, temperature tracking forms, and other documentation as assigned.
• Participate in team meetings, assessments, therapist meetings, monthly clinical staff meetings, trainings, and other meetings as requested.
• Communicate patient developments, concerns, and questions to the appropriate clinical team members.
• Work collaboratively with RBTs, BCBAs, clinical staff, families, and other members of the patient's treatment team.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming therapy environment.
• Keep patient areas and materials neat and organized.
• Complete assigned weekly tasks to support the center and therapy environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned by clinical and administrative leadership.

You don't need previous ABA experience to apply. Experience working with individuals with autism is preferred, but not required.

• Report to work on time and communicate with the appropriate person if you will be late.
• Follow LittleStar's attendance and call-off procedures, including calling out at least one hour prior to the scheduled shift.
• Request time off in advance according to LittleStar procedures.
• Utilize non-billable time appropriately and productively.
• Complete required documentation accurately and on time.
• Be flexible and adaptive to schedule changes and patient assignments.
• Respond appropriately and professionally to feedback.
• Respect LittleStar property and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
• Refrain from unauthorized use of cell phones, internet, and email while working.
• Refer parent questions that are outside the scope of your role to the appropriate staff member.

Work Environment

This is an active, hands-on position in a clinical environment. Our centers are energetic and engaging, with bright lights, active patients, and varying noise levels.

You may also work in a variety of settings, including:

• LittleStar centers
• Patient homes
• Schools
• Places of employment
• Community locations

You may work with multiple patients with different needs, abilities, and behavioral profiles, including individuals who may display challenging or unsafe behaviors.

This position is not eligible for telecommuting.

Physical & Psychological Requirements

This is a physically active position that requires working with patients of varying sizes, abilities, activity levels, and support needs.

Employees must be able to:

• Walk, run, climb stairs, bend, pivot, shuffle, lunge, and move quickly when needed.
• Sit and stand for extended periods.
• Sit on the floor with legs extended and lean back while supporting weight on an elbow.
• Lie flat on the floor, facing down.
• Transition independently and quickly from the floor to standing without assistance from a wall or chair or pushing up with the hands.
• Reach, grasp, handle, and manipulate objects with hands and arms.
• Demonstrate physical agility and quick reaction time.
• Lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
• Sustain high levels of physical activity throughout the workday.
• Work with patients who may be larger in height and/or weight than the employee.
• Remain calm, focused, and professional during challenging situations.

Employees will be trained in appropriate behavior management techniques as prescribed by patient behavior plans. This may include physical management procedures in response to aggressive or unsafe behavior.

Employees must successfully demonstrate techniques learned during Crisis De-escalation and Intervention (CDI) training within the first few weeks of employment and annually thereafter.

Because patient behaviors can be challenging and unpredictable, employees must be flexible and prepared to work with individuals presenting a range of ability levels and behavioral needs.

Communication & Confidentiality

Strong communication is an important part of this role. The Non-RBT Intern is expected to communicate appropriately and professionally with patients, families, coworkers, and members of the clinical team.

The position requires discretion when handling confidential information and strict adherence to LittleStar confidentiality policies and HIPAA Privacy Rule regulations.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is contingent upon successfully passing required initial and updated criminal history, background, and record checks, including driving history checks.

Employees must also wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as provided by LittleStar, when required. PPE may be necessary for illness prevention or in response to patient behaviors and may include masks, protective jackets, sleeves, hats, helmets, or other protective equipment.

• A valid driver's license.
