DESCRIPTION

Under direction, incumbents perform operational level duties as a working leader for Fleet technicians engaged in the maintenance and repair of a diverse inventory of university vehicles. This role is responsible for setting priorities for repair work and assigning duties to shop personnel, while providing technical guidance to ensure the proper coordination of maintenance for both in-house and sublet repairs. Key leadership duties include estimating repair costs, instructing colleagues on complex procedures, and maintaining meticulous time and material records. The working leader also serves as a primary liaison with vendors and inspects completed jobs to ensure they meet all technical specifications and safety compliance standards

The position involves the direct service, diagnosis, and repair of various fleet assets, including traditional light-duty vehicles like sedans, vans, and trucks, as well as alternative fuel and electric platforms such as Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) and Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs). Technical responsibilities encompass system overhauls, specialized equipment installation, and the operation of computerized diagnostic systems. Beyond direct mechanical work, the lead advises management on shop progress, equipment needs, and potential delays, and may provide supervision for shop personnel in the absence of the Garage Supervisor

In addition to operational leadership, the role supports critical compliance and administrative functions, including assisting with waste management, parts inventory, and procurement. The working leader oversees shop compliance standards which could include CUPA inspection preparation, and/or the testing portion of the annual California B.A.R. SMOG program where applicable to the fleet. As the department transitions toward sustainable practices and 100% electric vehicle goals, the lead is responsible for maintaining and updating technical knowledge to ensure the facility operates as an environmentally responsible repair environment

QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to provide effective leadership, training and assistance to Shop staff.

• Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations and two years of experience in automotive maintenance and repair including one year of experience as an Automotive Mechanic; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

• Solid understanding of CAL-OSHA and departmental safety standards related to automotive maintenance and repair.

• Problem-solving skills and sound, judgement. Ability to effectively communicate orally, in writing and electronically.

• Proven experience and knowledge in the field of Automotive vehicle maintenance and repair.

• Experience inspecting and diagnosing mechanical and electrical malfunctions and perform a variety of skilled repairs on automotive vehicle equipment, components and sub systems. Ability to operate and maintain hand and power tools typically used in the trade; experience with vehicle diagnostic equipment. Demonstrated experience in trouble shooting using sophisticated onboard diagnostic platforms, including scanners, Multi meters, scopes, and lab tops. Demonstrated ability to read & understand, A/C & D/C Voltage, ohms, amps, watts.

• Ability to effectively reference, interpret and apply information disseminated from mechanical, electrical and other relevant automotive schematics. Both hard bound and electronic formats.

• Ability to operate/drive university vehicles and trailers in a safe & lawful manner.

• Ability to promote positive public relations in a diverse customer and safety-driven environment. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to read, write and follow oral instruction.

• Excellent organizational skills necessary to independently prioritize workload and meet established deadlines.

• Ability to model and advocate UCSD Principles of Community.

• Thorough computer skills to add information to computerized vehicle maintenance programs, check email and other relative information available through the Internet.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Required to hold valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
• DMV check and clearance required prior to hire.
• California Bureau of Automotive Repair SMOG test certification preferred.
• May be required to work overtime.
• Must have the physical ability to perform essential duties and to work with and around noise related to automotive maintenance equipment. Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $65,793 - $94,983 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.51 - $45.49

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
