Job Title: Psychiatric Technician - Nights Job Description This night-shift psychiatric technician role focuses on delivering high-quality patient care in a behavioral health facility. You provide close supervision and guidance to patients, help maintain a safe and therapeutic environment, and support the clinical team in daily operations. The position includes day shift coverage with an additional shift differential starting at 11:00 p.m., and requires strong observational skills, clear communication, and a commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care. Responsibilities Provide consistent supervision and guidance to patients as part of a multidisciplinary patient care team. Maintain a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment for all patients on the unit. Observe patients closely and promptly report complaints and changes in psychiatric or medical condition to the Registered Nurse. Complete all required documentation used in the daily operation of the program, including accurate and objective entries in the medical record. Understand and implement all emergency policies and procedures, including the proper use of emergency restrictive devices, ensuring they are available and in good working order each shift. Collaborate with nursing leadership and team members to structure and monitor the unit milieu, and report any challenges in working with specific patients to the Registered Nurse or Team Leader. Participate in the training and orientation of new staff members as directed by designated organizational leaders. Perform and document routine and specialized monitoring of patient activities on the milieu, including any special observation assignments. Monitor vital signs, collect urine specimens, and assist patients with activities of daily living in accordance with guidelines and policies under the clinical direction of the Registered Nurse. Essential Skills Ability to provide safe, therapeutic supervision and guidance to patients in a behavioral health setting. Strong observation skills to recognize and report changes in patient psychiatric or medical status. Competence in completing clear, accurate, and objective documentation in medical records and program forms. Knowledge of and ability to follow emergency policies and procedures, including the use and maintenance of emergency restrictive devices. Effective teamwork and communication skills to collaborate with nurses, leaders, and co-workers in structuring and monitoring the unit milieu. Ability to monitor vital signs and collect urine specimens under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Capability to assist patients with activities of daily living in a respectful and supportive manner. Diploma-level education. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in psychiatric or behavioral health settings. Experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Experience as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). Pre‑med academic or clinical experience. Experience as a caregiver or in a similar direct‑care role. Work Environment The role is based in a behavioral health facility that operates around the clock and requires night‑shift coverage, with day shift work that includes a shift differential starting at 11:00 p.m. You work as part of a multidisciplinary team in a structured unit milieu focused on safety, therapeutic engagement, and consistent monitoring. The environment involves direct, face‑to‑face interaction with patients, frequent observation rounds, and adherence to established policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines. You use standard clinical tools and equipment to monitor vital signs, collect specimens, and support daily living activities. Staff typically wear professional clinical attire appropriate for a behavioral health setting and must remain alert, responsive, and prepared to implement emergency procedures when needed.
