Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction

The fellowship in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction at Northwell Health is a one-year program, starting on July 1st, 2027, offering comprehensive training in the full spectrum of head and neck oncologic surgery and complex microvascular reconstruction. The fellow will spend equal time at the two main sites for head and neck surgical oncology within Northwell Health – Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Lenox Hill Hospital. This will allow exposure to diverse patient populations and multidisciplinary care with teaching from a large faculty with extensive and varied experiences in the discipline. The graduating fellow will be equipped with the adaptability and clinical acumen needed for a successful career in the field. Clinical Experience The fellowship offers an exceptionally broad and high-volume operative experience to encompass the full breadth of head and neck surgical oncology. This includes mucosal malignancies of the upper aerodigestive tract, head and neck endocrine surgery, salivary gland pathologies and head and neck cutaneous malignancies. The fellow will develop expertise in both open and minimally invasive approaches including transoral robotic techniques. Working with our fellowship trained skull base faculty, the fellow will also have the option of further broadening their surgical repertoire by obtaining exposure to skull base approaches for management of sinonasal malignancies and skull base reconstruction. The fellowship also offers a high-volume microvascular reconstructive surgery experience. With approximately 200 free tissue transfer cases performed annually across the two sites, the fellow will graduate with the technical proficiency and independent decision-making skills necessary in complex head and neck reconstruction. They will develop advanced competency in the design, harvest, and inset of a wide variety of free flaps for both soft tissue and composite osseous reconstructions. This will encompass all aspects of reconstructive planning, including virtual surgical planning with immediate and delayed dental rehabilitation, and the management of reconstructive complications. Multidisciplinary Environment and Academic Development At both sites, the fellow will function as an integral member of the multidisciplinary head and neck oncology teams, participating in tumor boards, multidisciplinary clinics, and collaborative treatment planning. They will also serve as a leader and educator on the head and neck service – teaching and providing mentorship to residents in both operative and clinical settings – to foster the development skills in surgical education to prepare the fellow for a career that integrates teaching with clinical practice. The fellow will be expected to engage meaningfully in scholarly activity throughout the training year, with support and mentorship provided for clinical and translational research, quality improvement initiatives, and presentations at national and international meetings. They will have opportunities to participate in multi-institutional clinical trials and collaborative research networks. The program is committed to developing future leaders in head and neck surgical oncology who will contribute to advancing the field through innovation, education, and scholarship.
