Summary
The Pre-Apprentice is a temporary role providing broad work experience in performing a variety of maintenance tasks of limited scope and complexity while under instruction. Will rotate through various work assignments, especially during outages. Under the guidance of supervision and their assigned mentors, will develop job skills. In addition to work experience, this program will help participants learn about the duties and responsibilities of various maintenance crafts in order to help them to make career decisions. Pre-apprentices complete training on industry-related topics while at the plant and will also complete designated college courses on industry-related topics.
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma, General Educational Development (GED) equivalency or other high school equivalency credential.
Must provide an official transcript(s) for high school and any post-high school education. All records must be submitted prior to the deadline set by the Pre-Apprenticeship Committee (MPAC).
Must be at least 18 years of age by employment start date and a current Arizona resident.
Must be able to satisfy applicable NRC, security, physical, and psychological requirements to work within the protected area.
Must pass each section of the Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) Test.
Completion of the West-MEC, Energy and Manufacturing Systems Program or Energy and Industrial Technology Porgram
Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:
Good mechanical aptitude with knowledge of basic hand tools.
Basic computer/keyboard skills.
Basic arithmetic and High School algebra skills.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Nuclear requirement:
Any PVGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member. Any PVGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage. This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities. These are conditions of employment at PVGS.
Major Accountabilities
Embraces the Palo Verde safety culture, including: using Prevent Events tools, participating in pre-job briefings, reporting unsafe conditions, using personal protective equipment (PPE), avoiding injury, avoiding contamination, observing "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" (ALARA) strategies and demonstrating safety awareness.
Sets high goals and seeks out opportunities to achieve results, including: maintaining a positive attitude, using self-checking, demonstrating professionalism, avoiding security violations, observing the "Do It Right The First Time" philosophy, using the right tools for the job and demonstrating skill and ability with hand tools.

Expresses ideas clearly and effectively, including: having a questioning attitude, using the phonetic alphabet in communications when required, using three-legged communications when required, and maintaining open lines of communications with mentors.
Demonstrates keen desire to learn and understand, including: arriving on time to assigned duties, having a questioning attitude, and demonstrating willingness to listen and take direction.
