Medical Assistant/Patient Service Specialist

$17.79 - $25 per hour

Position Summary Under the supervision of the Practice Manager, the Medical Assistant/Patient Service Specialist functions as a member of the clinical and administrative team, completing daily clinical and administrative operations to ensure smooth day‑to‑day operations in the physician practice. The role includes medical/nursing support to provider staff in the ambulatory setting, preparing patients and seeing them through the entirety of their visit, as well as certain responsibilities of the Patient Service Specialist. Position Details Position: Medical Assistant Department: Patient Service Specialist Schedule: Full Time Essential Responsibilities / Duties Rooms patients and prepares them for the provider visit. Takes vital signs as necessary, ensuring accurate blood pressures, temperature, pulse, pulse oximetry, weight, height, respiratory rates, and entering them accurately into the EMR. Records patient history, chief complaint, pharmacy information, prescription list, etc. into the EMR for a physical exam. Obtains required consents, completes required forms as needed for specific visit types. Performs office testing as needed and carries out controls on certain in‑office tests. Performs EKGs as ordered. Chaperones providers as required. Administers vaccines and medications as ordered by the provider, following BMC policies. Stocks rooms and monitors expiration of supplies in exam rooms. Assists with incoming calls by answering, triaging, and routing telephone calls appropriately. Registers patients in the EMR, verifies demographics, and obtains accurate health‑insurance information. Conducts eligibility checks to ensure insurance reflects accurately. Schedules patients' appointments and appropriate testing as directed. Follows scheduling rules and directs schedules for patient visits in other practices. Performs pre‑visit planning daily for all upcoming scheduled appointments. Performs outreach to selected patient groups for patient care and quality initiatives, scheduling specialty appointments and testing as required. Informs the manager of all clinical or administrative supply needs or assists with ordering. Obtains prior authorizations and/or insurance referrals as per practice need. Performs phlebotomy, including venipuncture and collection of blood specimens for laboratory processing in the outpatient clinic, adhering to proper patient identification and safety protocols. Conducts point‑of‑care testing as required and processes laboratory specimens in accordance with guidelines. Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes clinical instruments and equipment per infection control standards, and maintains documentation for sterilization logs. Ensures safe and accurate venipuncture, specimen handling, and point‑of‑care testing in accordance with clinical policies and infection‑control standards. No prior experience required. Preferred Education and Experience: Education from an approved medical assistant program; One to three years of medical assistant experience; Phlebotomy experience. Certifications, Licenses, Registrations (Required): N/A. Certifications, Licenses, Registrations (Preferred): Certified Medical Assistant Certification; Phlebotomy certification. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): Strong customer service skills; Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Must be able to work independently with little supervision. Compensation Range $17.79–$25.00 per hour. This range is an estimate based on minimum job qualifications; additional factors such as education, experience, skills, certifications, and market competitiveness influence the final offer.
