Fort Carson (formerly Camp Carson)

Established in 1942, following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. Camp Carson was named in honor of the legendary Army scout, General Christopher "Kit" Carson, who explored much of the West in the 1800s. Fort Carson's beautiful scenery has made it one of the most requested duty stations in the U.S. Army. Requirements

• The Internal Medicine Physician shall provide inpatient and outpatient Internal Medicine Physician services to authorized beneficiaries. The Internal Medicine Physician shall be the primary care manager (PCM) for a designated group of patients during the term of the contract. The Internal Medicine Physician shall be required to treat patients from other provider panels. The Internal Medicine Physician shall have inpatient admitting responsibilities and perform inpatient rounds. The Internal Medicine Physician shall perform chart reviews and attend medical staff meetings as part of the normal workday.
• The Internal Medicine Physician shall provide initial emergency medical care required to any civilian, military, or military beneficiary requiring it in life-threatening situations. Patients shall be transferred to the appropriate military or civilian hospital when the attending physician determines that the patient is stable enough to make the trip.
• The Internal Medicine Physician shall interview patients with common and complex illnesses, diseases, and functional disorders in the areas of Allergy and Immunology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonary Disease and Rheumatology. The Internal Medicine Physician may admit and may provide care to patients in the intensive care setting in accordance with MTF policies, Internal Medicine Physicians assess, stabilize, and determine disposition of patients with emergent conditions in accordance with medical staff policy. They may assess, stabilize, and determine disposition of patients with emergent conditions and refer patients to military or civilian hospitals for more complex medical problems. The Internal Medicine Physician shall provide comprehensive and continuing health and medical care services e.g. diagnosis, prevention, therapy, maintenance and rehabilitation. The Internal Medicine Physician shall manage the health care needs of patients with serious illnesses through consultation or direct referral to specialty physicians.
• The Internal Medicine Physician shall write prescriptions only for medications within the scope of work of the Internal Medicine Physician. Medications beyond the scope of work of the Internal Medicine Physician require interaction with physicians from other clinics.
• The Internal Medicine Physician shall complete medical records, forms and documents.
• The Internal Medicine Physician shall take the patient history and perform medical surveillance physicals on appointed military and Department of Army Civilians. The Internal Medicine Physician shall request lab tests, x-rays, pharmaceuticals, etc. via the CHCS computer system. The Internal Medicine Physician shall request consultations and procedures as considered appropriate. The Internal Medicine Physician shall study health records and evaluate the significance of total clinical evidence.
• The Internal Medicine Physician shall make periodic follow-up examinations of patients to determine progress and reaction to treatment, review clinical evidence to detect deviation from normal disease course, and determine the patient's progress. When deemed appropriate, the Internal Medicine Physician shall consult with other physicians concerning the significance of symptoms and interpretations, prepare clinical reports of each examination, consultation and diagnosis, and record other pertinent data in the appropriate format. The Internal Medicine Physician shall maintain accurate and up-to-date records, including daily man-hours.
• The Internal Medicine Physician shall be capable of performing the full range of Internal Medicine services including diagnosis and treatment of urgent/acute diseases/injuries to include but not limited to: Perform exercise portion of radioisotope cardiac perfusion imaging tests, Perform pharmacologic stress portion of radioisotope cardiac perfusion imaging tests, Basic synovial fluid analysis, Central venous pressure monitoring, Electrocardiogram (EKG) interpretation, Cardiac stress test, Mechanical ventilator management (invasive and noninvasive), Pulmonary function testing and interpretation, and Interpret holter monitor/event monitor
• The Internal Medicine Physician shall use accepted medical practices and standards. Independently evaluate, diagnose, and provide medical treatment to patients enrolled in the Internal Medicine Clinic. Determines the need for tests and provides emergency care to accident victims. Shall conduct examinations of children and adults to determine the need for x-rays and lab tests and interpret findings and test results. The HCP shall prescribe and administer treatments for colds, infectious diseases, and other diseases. The HCP shall provide all medical care on difficult or complex problems e.g. cardiac conditions and cystic fibrosis. The HCP shall be required to perform physicals and sexual abuse exams; and determine the need to hospitalize patients or to refer patients to a specialty clinic, consultant or other hospital. The HCP shall monitor patient progress during local hospital treatment and upon the patient's return from other hospitals. When appropriate, the HCP shall care for patients via telephone consultation.
• The Internal Medicine Physician shall serve as the attending physician in the inpatient unit when on call or as needed; prescribe and/or provide treatment to patients, and determine when they may be released from EACH. The Internal Medicine Physician shall provide medical care for patients on the ward or ICU as needed.
• The Internal Medicine Physician shall be capable of performing the procedures as a minimum: Arterial cannula placement, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy with/without biopsy, Lumbar puncture, Tube thoracostomy, Incision and drainage of cysts and minor abscesses, Superficial needle aspiration, Thoracentesis, Abdominal paracentesis, Cardioversion (elective), Bronchoprovocation challenge, Endotracheal intubation, Intraosseous catheter / trocar insertion, Complete/partial nail removal with/without destruction of nail matrix, Management of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion via insulin pump, Arthrocentesis, Joint injection, Soft tissue injections, Cryosurgical removal of skin lesions, Laceration repair, Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) exam, and Central venous catheter insertion. The Internal Medicine Physician shall possess, and maintain the necessary skills and certifications to perform these tasks.

Qualifications

• Must have graduated from an accredited Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) program to include a Internal Medicine residency program.
• Must be Board Certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine Physicians or American Osteopathic Board of Internist. The Internal Medicine Physician may be a new graduate of an Internal Medicine Residency Program and will at a minimum be Board Eligible.
• Must have a minimum of one (1) year of full-time experience as a practicing Internal Medicine Physician in the last two (2) years. Residency/Internship time counts as practicing experience. Time spent in an administrative capacity as a claims reviewer, medical school instructor, consultant, internet or telemedicine physician, medical director, etc. does not qualify as practicing time.
• Possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine in one of the 50 United States, District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or U.S. Virgin Islands.
• Possess and maintain at all times a current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration number and BNDD number as required by state agencies where the provider is licensed.
• Possess and maintain certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). All certifications must be American Heart Association (AHA).
