Emergency Communications Officer Trainee (911 Operator) Join to apply for the Emergency Communications Officer Trainee (911 Operator) role at Pasco Police Department. Under close supervision, trainees will learn to answer non‑emergency and 911 emergency requests, process enhanced 9‑1‑1 calls, and dispatch fire, EMS, and law enforcement units. Accurate and rapid call processing requires following prescribed standard operating procedures. Trainees will be assigned to a shift when released; initial assignment likely to night shift. Applicants must be available for any shift, holidays, weekends, and overtime. Essential Job Functions Receive telephone calls from citizens or emergency personnel, screen and initiate appropriate action per established protocols. Offer pre‑arrival medical and fire instructions via telephone per established protocols. Operate communications equipment, dispatch assistance units, and enter call records into the CAD system. Maintain required files, records, and accurate communication logs. Takes complaints, reports issues to supervisor, and documents as required. Perform related work as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of radio communications rules and regulations. Knowledge of basic radio operations and radio‑telephone procedures. Knowledge of Pasco County geography and adjoining counties. Knowledge of basic medical, fire, and law terminology. Ability to react calmly, quickly, and handle emergency situations. Clear, well‑modulated voice and courteous communication. Maintain accurate, detailed accounts of operations. Multitasking, initiative, teamwork. Make sound decisions under stressful situations. Operate radio and telephone equipment. Effective oral and written communication, active listening. Operate a computer and related software. Follow established protocols and chain of command. Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment. Maintain effective working relationships. Experience with multi‑line telephone equipment, computerized customer service, split‑ear, multitasking, decision making, and critical thinking preferred. Minimum Requirements Physical: Sit at console for extended periods; reach all control panels; good vision (no color blindness); excellent hearing. Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Preferred: 1 year experience in a fast‑paced, high‑volume dispatch environment. Age: 18 years or older. Must pass critical pre‑employment testing, drug screening, polygraph, psychological evaluation, and background check. Must possess valid Florida driver’s license. Licensing, Certifications, and Registrations Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD) Emergency Police Dispatcher (EPD) Florida Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification FCIC/NCIC certifications Must obtain all certifications within three months of hire. Progression After completing the training program, employees advance to Emergency Communications Officer I and receive a pay increase. Applicants must meet requirements and progress to Emergency Communications Officer I within six months of hire. Special Requirement: Flexible Scheduling Required to work flexible schedules including evenings, weekends, holidays, standby, and mandatory overtime.
