Sports Medicine Assistant Resident - Full Time - New Orleans

Job Overview This position serves as a full‑time post‑graduate resident who, under supervision, performs therapeutic procedures such as wound care, crutch and gait training, and instructs patients on exercise. Duties include assisting physicians with evaluation, documentation, treatment, education, and care coordination in a clinic setting, as well as supporting surgeons during operative procedures. Residents also complete a rigorous orthopedic curriculum and may participate in research projects and program metrics. Key Responsibilities Assist physicians with research and quality improvement projects. Educate patients regarding treatment plans, pathophysiology, anatomy, and clinical decision making. Gather patients’ medical history, perform focused clinical examinations, document findings and treatment plans, and place orders in the electronic medical record system under written order guidelines. Perform wound care, crutch and gait training, casting, splinting, or bracing, and instruct patients on exercise programs. Assist physicians in both clinic and operative settings, working independently and under direct supervision as required. Complete didactic coursework and deliver presentations as directed by the Residency Program Director. Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, ensuring privacy, appropriate communication, and cultural sensitivity. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: Required – Bachelor’s Degree in Allied Health. Preferred – Master’s Degree in Allied Health or Education. Work Experience: Required – None. Preferred – 3 years related experience. Certifications: Required – Certified Orthopedic Technologist (OTC). Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association. Board of Certified Athletic Trainers Certification (BOCATC). Preferred – License in the state of practice. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Excellent written, verbal, and follow‑up skills. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to work well with a team. Ability to interact professionally with patients, clinic staff, physicians, and departments. Ability to multi‑task with high attention to detail and complete tasks. Comfortable communicating with patients. Physical and Environmental Demands The role requires the ability to move objects ranging from 10 to 100 pounds. Frequent lifting of 25–50 pounds and occasional lifting of 50–100 pounds are expected. Duties may involve walking or standing for significant periods, pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls, and maintaining a production rate pace. Routine contact with blood, body fluids, and tissue occurs. The position involves potential exposure to hazardous medications, hazardous waste, and communicable diseases.
