Job Summary:
The Patient Registrar is responsible for performing all tasks related to pre-registration and registration of both inpatients and outpatients. This role involves securing and calculating upfront collections such as co-pays and co-insurance accurately and efficiently while providing hospitable service. The Patient Registrar also assists uninsured patients by screening for eligibility in state programs and facilitating application processes. The Patient Registrar is responsible for performing all tasks related to pre-registration and registration of both inpatients and outpatients. The Patient Registrar also assists uninsured patients by screening for eligibility in state programs and facilitating application processes. Responsibilities:
- Perform pre-registration and registration of patients, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
- Secure and calculate upfront collections including co-pays and co-insurance.
- Interview and screen uninsured patients to identify eligibility for state programs and temporary coverage.
- Assist patients with completing necessary paperwork for benefits applications.
- Compile records and assess information to determine eligibility status.
- Document and update patient information and application outcomes in the database.
- Communicate effectively with staff, patients, guarantors, insurance companies, and physicians.
- Complete hospital presumptive eligibility training and certification programs as required.
- Maintain adherence to HIPAA laws and confidentiality standards.
- Provide excellent customer service and phone communication skills.
- Travel to off-site outpatient locations as needed for financial counseling.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; continuing education preferred.
- Minimum one year experience in a high-volume healthcare facility or medical office setting.
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in Word and Excel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong customer service and phone skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology strongly preferred.
- Insurance and billing experience strongly required.
- Ability to type 45+ words per minute.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Driver's license and ability to travel to off-site locations.
- Completion of Hospital Presumptive Eligibility comprehensive training program and certification.
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish or Chinese (Mandarin) preferred.
- Experience in medical office or hospital work beyond one year preferred.
- Strict adherence to HIPAA privacy laws and confidentiality requirements.
- Work involves interaction with a diverse patient population, including uninsured and vulnerable individuals.
- May require travel to outpatient or financial counseling off-site locations.
- Monday through Friday schedule with hours typically from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM; hours may vary.
- Standard daytime shifts with no specified on-call or weekend requirements.
