Construction Superintendent
This construction superintendent role offers a long-term opportunity with an established general contractor that focuses on commercial projects across Central Indiana and select locations in surrounding Midwest states. The position centers on ground-up commercial construction, including retail, financial, and dispensary projects, with an initial assignment on a new-build banking facility in Newburgh, Indiana. The superintendent will take full ownership of the jobsite, lead field operations, and act as the primary on-site representative, ensuring projects are built safely, accurately, and on schedule. The organization follows a "trust, but verify" philosophy and values superintendents who remain visible in the field, build strong client relationships, and consistently verify that subcontractor work matches the drawings and specifications.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary company representative and point of contact on the jobsite, maintaining a professional presence with clients, subcontractors, and inspectors.
- Manage daily field operations from project startup through closeout, ensuring work progresses safely, correctly, and on schedule.
- Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, consultants, and deliveries to keep the project organized and efficiently sequenced.
- Prepare and maintain four-week look-ahead schedules, updating and adjusting as needed to reflect field conditions and project milestones.
- Ensure subcontractors are properly sequenced, understand their responsibilities, and meet schedule commitments.
- Walk the project consistently to independently verify completed work and confirm that installations match drawings, specifications, and client expectations.
- Manage jobsite quality control by identifying deficiencies early and driving timely corrective actions before they become larger issues.
- Enforce site safety expectations, promote safe work practices, and maintain a safe working environment for all personnel on site.
- Review drawings, details, and current construction documents, including digital plans and PDFs, to stay current with design requirements and changes.
- Coordinate foundations, underground work, site activities, framing, building enclosure, and subsequent interior and finish scopes.
- Communicate schedule risks, field issues, and required decisions to the Project Manager and other office-based partners in a timely manner.
- Work collaboratively with the Project Manager, Assistant Project Manager, Project Engineer, and office team, focusing on field execution while they manage cost and administrative functions.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with the client and subcontractor partners to support repeat business and a positive project experience.
- Conduct or support inspections and ensure work complies with applicable requirements, standards, and client-specific construction guidelines.
- Document project progress through email, construction management systems, and other digital tools, maintaining clear and accurate records.
- Keep the job moving through proactive communication, including direct phone calls and regular field follow-up with trades and stakeholders.
- Protect and strengthen the client relationship by delivering consistent, high-quality work that positions the company for future projects.
- Perform limited hands-on field tasks when reasonably needed, such as minor adjustments or small corrective items, to help maintain progress.
- Engage actively in the field rather than managing solely from the trailer, staying visible, accessible, and involved with daily jobsite activities.
- Support future assignments that may include projects in Central Indiana and other regional locations such as Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, or nearby states, including occasional travel as needed.
Essential Skills:
- Demonstrated experience as a superintendent or similar field leadership role on ground-up commercial construction projects.
- Experience working for a general contractor, with a clear understanding of how field operations integrate with project management and office functions.
- Comprehensive understanding of the complete construction process, including sitework and underground utilities, foundations, structural or wood framing, building enclosure, interior construction, inspections, and closeout.
- Experience coordinating multiple subcontractor trades on active construction sites and sequencing their work effectively.
- Ability to read, understand, and build from construction drawings, details, and specifications, including digital plans and PDF documents.
- Strong attention to detail and a willingness to personally verify work in the field to ensure accuracy and quality.
- Experience managing commercial projects in the approximate $2 million to $3 million range or larger.
- Proven ability to manage jobsite quality and safety, including enforcing safety expectations and promoting safe work practices.
- Ability to walk an active construction site and perform the physical functions required of a field superintendent, including regular walking and jobsite activity.
- Client-facing communication skills, including the ability to represent the company professionally and maintain strong relationships with owners and stakeholders.
- Basic computer proficiency, including sending and receiving email, opening and reviewing PDFs, navigating digital construction documents, and learning construction management and scheduling platforms.
- Ability and willingness to travel for project assignments in regional markets as needed.
- Ability to work approximately 40 to 50 hours per week, with flexibility for occasional early mornings, extended days, or weekend work when project conditions require it.
- Willingness to complete required background and drug screening as part of the hiring process.
- Proactive, accountable approach to project execution, with a focus on solving problems and keeping the project moving forward.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
- College degree combined with relevant construction experience.
- Experience with retail construction and wood-frame commercial projects.
- Familiarity with OSHA 30 standards or similar safety training, reflecting a strong safety mindset.
- Experience working with repeat commercial clients and adhering to strict client-specific construction standards.
- Comfort using digital tools such as construction management systems, scheduling platforms, and electronic drawing viewers.
- Carpentry experience or hands-on construction background that supports practical problem-solving in the field.
- Ability to adapt to different project locations and environments, including regional travel across Midwest states.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks, priorities, and stakeholders simultaneously.
Work Environment:
This role is primarily field-based and onsite five days per week, with typical construction hours beginning around 7:00 a.m. and an expected workload of approximately 40 to 50 hours per week. The initial assignment is a ground-up, wood-frame commercial banking project in Newburgh, Indiana, anticipated to run for about nine months and requiring close attention to drawings and client-specific construction standards. The superintendent spends most of the day walking the jobsite, engaging with trades, and actively overseeing field activities, with occasional light hands-on tasks such as minor adjustments or small field fixes. Work involves substantial use of digital plans, PDF drawings, email, and construction software, supported by a project management and office team that handles cost management and administrative functions. Future assignments may include projects in Central Indiana and other surrounding states such as Kentucky, Illinois, and Michigan, and will involve regional travel as needed. The company provides housing for travel projects, working directly with the superintendent to select suitable accommodations such as Airbnb, hotel, extended-stay lodging, or an apartment within an agreed budget. A daily meals and incidentals allowance is provided in addition to housing, and mileage is reimbursed at an applicable rate. For those who prefer to travel with a camper or trailer, the company is open to discussing alternative arrangements and applying housing funds toward that setup. Management recognizes that travel can be demanding and strives to offer flexibility for home time when project conditions allow, such as permitting early departures for important family commitments. The work environment emphasizes safety, quality, professional conduct, and a collaborative culture where field and office teams support each other to deliver successful projects and build long-term client relationships.
