HVAC Mechanic/Controls Technician

Job Description Fairfield University is a co-educational, comprehensive Jesuit university with a 200-acre campus located along the scenic shoreline community of Fairfield, CT. The University has approximately 3,500 undergraduate and 1,200 graduate students pursuing degrees within five schools: The College of Arts and Sciences, The Charles F. Dolan School of Business, The School of Engineering, The Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies, and the School of Education and Human Development. Division Facilities Management Department Facilities Management – Energy Services Basic Function Performs routine repairs and provides preventative maintenance on all heating, ventilating and air‑conditioning equipment; possesses familiarity with electrical and mechanical drawings, low‑voltage controls, motor controls, and DDC controls; responsible for cleanliness and safety, documentation, backup support, and interaction with various supervisors. Unusual Work Conditions Work on roofs and climb ladders. Must be available for emergency call‑ins. Must operate a motor vehicle. Capable of working alone and lifting reasonable amounts of weight with no physical restrictions. Must cover any shift due to vacation or illness. Knowledge and Skills Needed Education: High School diploma; some trade school preferred. Connecticut State HVAC license (D2) required. Experience: Systems‑oriented environment with limited exposure to servicing; familiarity with HVAC tools and instruments; knowledge of electrical techniques and ability to read floor plans. EPA, OSHA, or state licenses or certifications desirable. Valid Connecticut driver’s license in good standing and good physical condition required. Schedule This is a 3rd shift position. The Energy Department work‑week is on a rotating two‑week schedule that provides employees working every other weekend as follows: Week 1 – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday (off Thursday, Friday). Week 2 – Monday through Friday (off Saturday, Sunday). Reports To Supervisor, HVAC Essential Functions Perform routine repairs and provide preventative maintenance on all heating, ventilating and air‑conditioning equipment in campus buildings including dormitories, townhouses, apartment complex and Central Utilities Facilities. Maintain air handling units with filter replacements, pneumatic controls, exhaust fans, etc. Read electrical and mechanical drawings. Familiarity with low‑voltage controls and motor controls; DDC controls (e.g., Alterton and Carrier Comfort Works). Ensure adequate operation, temperature, pressure and safety of equipment. Notify supervisor of abnormal pressures and temperatures before adjusting. Interact with contractors as needed. Assist on installations of new or repaired equipment utilizing knowledge of electrical and mechanical techniques. Be responsible for cleanliness and safety of equipment rooms in designated buildings. Complete appropriate documentation. Assess requisitions for supplies needed for servicing. Maintain and log accurate records of malfunctions and repairs. Provide backup support if the Associate Director of Energy Services and the Supervisor, HVAC are absent. Interact with the Associate Director of Energy Services and the Supervisor, HVAC on major equipment problems and recommend corrective actions. Participate in growth and development of the department. Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings and attend seminars as needed. Promote an image of efficiency and courtesy throughout the university community, consistent with the department’s mission. Provide recommendations on system modifications, upgrades, policies and procedures. Promote safe and secure working conditions. Promote proper utilization of equipment and materials. Report immediately to supervisor any unsafe working conditions. Perform other related duties as directed by responsibilities. Duties may be changed and/or added at any time.
