Job Description

The Clinical Laboratory Technician within the Cell Kinetics Laboratory performs complex analyses on blood, tissue, and body fluids to support health care providers in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating patients. Testing is conducted in specialized laboratories and involves both highly skilled manual techniques and automated procedures using sophisticated instrumentation. The role includes operating and maintaining instruments, troubleshooting assays, evaluating tests for accuracy, assisting with interpretation of results, and providing operational support to optimize testing workflows. The technician works with multiple computer systems to retrieve information and report results, may work with minimal supervision, and may assist with specimen collection. Strict adherence to safety protocols is required when handling infectious specimens, chemicals, and other laboratory hazards.

Responsibilities

• Perform analyses on blood, tissue, bone marrow, and other body fluids to aid in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of patients.
• Conduct testing in specialized laboratories using both manual techniques and automated instrumentation.
• Operate, maintain, and perform basic troubleshooting on laboratory instruments, including flow cytometers and other analytical equipment.
• Evaluate test results for accuracy and reliability, and assist with interpreting results as needed.
• Work with multiple computer systems to retrieve patient and specimen information and accurately report laboratory results.
• Follow an assembly-line workflow in the Cell Kinetics lab, including pipetting, aliquoting, centrifuging, and adding chemicals to isolate white blood cells.
• Stain isolated white blood cells with antibodies and prepare samples for analysis.
• Run stained cells on flow cytometers and ensure proper instrument performance and data quality.
• Adhere strictly to laboratory safety protocols when working with infectious specimens, chemicals, and other hazards.
• Assist with specimen collection when required, following established procedures and quality standards.
• Provide operational support activities to optimize testing throughput and efficiency.
• Participate in training across multiple laboratory benches, initially within Cell Kinetics and, upon becoming a permanent employee, across additional benches in the laboratory.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in chemistry or a human biological science is required; acceptable degrees include Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, and related fields.
• Undergraduate research experience preferred (not required).

Work Environment

This position is based in a specialized clinical laboratory environment with a focus on Cell Kinetics, including testing for leukemia and lymphoma. Samples typically include blood, bone marrow, and tissue specimens processed in an assembly-line format across multiple benches, such as white blood cell isolation, antibody staining, and flow cytometry analysis. The schedule runs Tuesday through Saturday, with start times varying between 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. depending on the assigned bench. The laboratory uses sophisticated instrumentation and multiple computer systems, and staff follow strict safety protocols for handling infectious specimens and hazardous chemicals. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rochester, MN.

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $24.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
