Highway Equipment OperatorUnder the supervision of the Patrol Superintendent, performs road maintenance and works on road improvement projects. Provides services relating to the State and County Highway systems as may generally be required or as may be required in emergency situations, and in general help provide highway safety in the County. First review of applications on September 8, 2026.Essential duties and responsibilities include:Performs duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, snow plowing and various highway improvement, maintenance and repair workResponds to emergency calls at anytime, including weekends, evenings, and holidaysConsults with supervisor(s) to obtain project or procedure changesPerforms heavy manual workPerforms preventative maintenance in accordance with prescribed methods.Assists with equipment maintenance including, but not limited to, greasing, oil changes, regular thorough washing and cleaning, minor repairs, mounting and dismounting of equipment attachments, changing plow and wing bladesPerforms related work, including labor and semi-skilled assignmentsCompletes accurate operational and preventative maintenance records in a neat, clear, timely and concise mannerEducation and experience requirements include:High School Diploma or equivalentMinimum of four (4) years' experience in road maintenance/repair and/or construction workKnowledge, skills and abilities required to perform job include:Knowledge and skills to use the following small equipment: measuring devices including measuring tape, mobile radio and small hand tools such as chainsaws, brush saws, shovel, pick, axe, and weed eatersKnowledge and skills to use the following highway equipment: trucks - pickup through tri-axle diesels, snowplows, patrol wings, material spreaders, self-contained air compressor with attachments, tractor with commercial mowing attachments, brush chipper, tar kettle with attachments, skid steer loaderProficient skills in the operation of various types of trucks and light equipmentAbility to work odd hours and week-ends as neededAbility to respond within 30 minutes when called in an emergencyAbility to work overtime as neededAbility to establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees and the publicSupervisory responsibilities include:NoneCertificates, licenses, registrations:Possess and maintain valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License with A, B, C & N and Air Brake EndorsementsHIPAA responsibility:All members of the workforce have a responsibility to watch for unauthorized use or disclosures of Protected Health Information (PHI), to act to prevent the action, and to report suspected breaches of privacy and security policies to their supervisor, or to the Privacy or Security Officer (example of a breach: member or visitor looking through a claim or personal information left on a desk).Physical demands:Over 50%, or majority, of the work is spent sitting, hearing, using far vision, and low handling. A lesser amount of time (35%) is spent standing, walking, feeling, talking, using near vision, low lifting up to 50 lbs., low pushing/pulling, and medium handling. Stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing (using legs and feet), reaching, balancing, bending/twisting, medium/high lifting up to 100 lbs., low/medium carrying, medium pushing/pulling and low fingering is done to a lesser degree (10% of the time). In non-routine conditions (5% of the time), crawling, running, climbing (using legs and arms for support), very high lifting over 100 lbs., high/very high carrying, high/very high pushing/pulling, high handling and medium/high fingering are necessary.Work environment:Over 80% of the work is performed outside. Working in extreme cold; extreme heat; noise; experiencing dramatic shifts in falling temperature; occur 25% of the time. Hazards from fast moving vehicles; working inside; dramatic shifts in rising temperature; humid conditions; vibrations occur 10% of the time. In unusual situations, wet conditions are present as well as many hazards - mechanical, electrical, burns, and heights over 12 feet. Fumes, mists, gases, odors, dust, poor ventilation and being in a physically confining area are also present in unusual situations.
