Contra Costa County Health Services Department is recruiting individuals on a continuous basis to fill entry-level Physical Therapist I positions. Therapists may be assigned to the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and its Health Centers or the California Children Services (CCS) Programs located throughout the County. Physical Therapist I is an entry-level classification requiring no experience. Incumbents in this classification perform a full range of general therapy treatments while developing and learning the skills and knowledge necessary to apply more advanced and/or specialized treatments.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may remain in effect for six months.

The Board of Supervisors have authorized the following future salary increases for this classification: 5% on July 1, 2025. Bargaining Unit: Local 856 - Health Services Unit.

Typical tasks include evaluating and planning physical therapy treatments in accordance with medical direction, administering or supervising the administration of physical therapy treatments, instructing patients in pain management, monitoring and facilitating patients progress, developing or directing development of special equipment, providing and promoting excellent customer service for all internal and external customers, explaining medical recommendations with respect to physical therapy to patients and their families, observing patient reaction, keeping records and preparing required reports, learning to perform specialized and advanced therapy treatments, administering diagnostic and prognostic tests, providing consultation and education relative to therapy treatment, collaborating with other care providers to ensure proper patient treatment and follow-up, securing and returning clinic supplies and equipment and maintaining required records and statistics, preparing reports relative to patient treatment, discharge planning and the evaluation of treatment services, providing training and work direction to aides, assistants, interns and volunteers, consulting with other therapists as needed.

Minimum qualifications include either possession and maintenance of a valid license as a Physical Therapist issued by the Physical Therapy Board of California, or graduation from an approved school of physical therapy and acceptance of an application to take the State of California Physical Therapy Licensing Examination. Continued employment under the latter requirement is dependent upon successfully passing the licensing examination that has been applied for. Must possess and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate issued by the American Heart Association or a CPR certification issued by the American Red Cross. Applicants must submit a copy of a valid License as a Physical Therapist issued by the Physical Therapy Board of California or proof of graduation from an approved school of physical therapy and acceptance of an application to take the State of California Physical Therapy Licensing Examination AND a completed supplemental questionnaire. An application submitted without a valid License, or proof of graduation, etc. and supplemental questionnaire will be considered incomplete and will therefore be disqualified.

Selection process includes application filing and evaluation, training and experience evaluation. After you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with Contra Costa County. If you accept a conditional job offer, the Human Resources department will contact you to schedule a fingerprinting appointment. All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
