Assistant Wrestling Coach (26-27)
Location: Sherrard Middle School
Employment Term: 2026-2027 School Year, Season Varies Including Flex Days
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Plan, organize, and supervise all aspects of the assigned athletic program, including practices, contests, conditioning activities, team meetings, and related team events.
- Promote student safety, welfare, and appropriate conduct while students are under the coach's supervision, including before, during, and after practices, contests, travel, and team activities.
- Develop and maintain a positive team culture that emphasizes sportsmanship, respect, discipline, teamwork, and school pride.
- Support the educational mission of the school by encouraging academic success, appropriate behavior, responsible citizenship, and regular school attendance among student-athletes.
- Comply with all applicable board policies, administrative procedures, conference/league requirements, state athletic association rules, and federal/state laws governing student athletics.
- Communicate and work cooperatively with administrators, athletic personnel, students, parents/guardians, officials, other coaches, and the public to support the athletic program.
- Coordinate with coaches and athletic programs at other grade levels and schools, when applicable, to promote program continuity and student development.
- Supervise, account for, and help maintain equipment, uniforms, supplies, and assigned facilities in a safe, responsible, and organized manner.
- Provide appropriate leadership and direction to assistant coaches and volunteers assigned to the program, consistent with school expectations and administrative oversight.
- Maintain professional conduct, professional work habits, and positive public representation of the school and athletic program.
- Participate in required meetings, trainings, certifications, and professional development; maintain and improve coaching knowledge, skills, and required credentials.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the principal, athletic director, or other appropriate administrator.
Qualifications:
- A coach for a WVSSAC sport must be certified as a teacher (or substitute) in the State of WV or complete the National Federal Interscholastic Coaches Education Program as endorsed by the WVSSAC and the State Board of Education, and receive a coaching authorization issued by the WV Department of Education.
- Must also have or be willing to get current CPR/AED certification.
- Applicants must be fully credentialed professionals or substitutes or hold a valid WVDE coaching certification before participating in ANY WVSSAC sport coaching duties.
Physical Demands:
- Frequently stand, walk, move throughout indoor and outdoor athletic areas, and remain present for practices, contests, meetings, travel, and team activities.
- Communicate verbally and hear effectively in settings with moderate to high background noise, including gyms, fields, tracks, stadiums, locker rooms, sidelines, buses, and crowds.
- Use close, distance, and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus to observe participants, monitor safety, evaluate techniques, and respond to game or practice conditions.
- Use hands and arms to handle equipment, demonstrate or support drills, distribute materials, operate communication devices, and perform routine coaching tasks.
- Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, climb stairs, and navigate uneven or changing surfaces such as fields, tracks, courts, dugouts, sidelines, bleachers, and locker-room areas.
- Occasionally demonstrate sport-specific techniques or movements and move quickly in response to play, supervision needs, weather, injury, or safety situations.
- Lift, carry, push, or pull athletic equipment and supplies generally up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally, with assistance or appropriate equipment when needed.
- Maintain attention, judgment, situational awareness, and emotional control during routine and unexpected situations involving students, contests, travel, and athletic events.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed in a variety of athletic and school settings, including gymnasiums, fields, tracks, courts, stadiums, weight rooms, locker rooms, classrooms, buses, and off-site competition venues.
- The position may require indoor and outdoor work in varying weather and environmental conditions, including heat, cold, wind, humidity, rain, and changing field or surface conditions.
- The employee may work during regular school hours, evenings, weekends, school breaks, and extended days associated with practices, contests, tournaments, travel, and special events.
- The work environment may include moderate to loud noise from participants, spectators, public address systems, music, whistles, and athletic activity.
- The employee may encounter wet, muddy, icy, slippery, hard, or uneven walking/playing surfaces and moving athletic equipment, balls, or projectiles associated with practice and competition.
- The employee is expected to maintain a safe environment, follow district and school safety procedures, use assigned protective equipment when applicable, and respond appropriately to student injuries, emergencies, and weather-related or facility-related conditions.
