Position Summary An EEG (electroencephalogram) technician is a healthcare professional who records and monitors electrical activity in the brain to help diagnose neurological conditions such as epilepsy, sleep disorders, and brain injuries. They prepare patients for procedures by explaining the process, applying electrodes to the scalp, and ensuring proper equipment setup. EEG technicians operate specialized machines to capture brain wave data, monitor patients during testing, and identify irregular patterns for physician review. They maintain accurate records, ensure patient comfort and safety, and may assist neurologists in interpreting results while adhering to clinical standards and protocols. Core Responsibilities Explain EEG procedures to patients Prepare scalp and attach electrodes Ensure patient comfort and cooperation Equipment Operation Set up and calibrate EEG machines Monitor brain wave activity during tests Troubleshoot technical issues Data Collection & Monitoring Record electrical brain activity accurately Document patient behavior during testing Documentation Label and store EEG results properly Prepare reports for neurologists Clinical Support Work closely with neurologists and healthcare teams Follow safety and infection control protocols Specialized EEG Training Formal training through: Neurodiagnostic Technology (NDT) program Hospital-based EEG training programs Community college certificate programs Have knowledge in: Brain wave patterns Patient preparation and safety Recognizing abnormal results Certification (Highly Recommended) Prefer certification from: ABRET Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation The most common credential is: Registered EEG Technologist (R. EEG T.)
