Position Summary
The M5 Machinist is a senior-level skilled trades role responsible for independently setting up, operating, troubleshooting, and optimizing machining processes to manufacture complex, precision components. This role requires advanced technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision while ensuring quality, safety, and productivity standards are met.
The M5 Machinist may provide technical guidance to junior machinists and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently set up, operate, and optimize CNC and/or manual machining equipment (e.g., mills, lathes, multi-axis machines)
- Interpret complex engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and work instructions
- Select tooling, determine feeds and speeds, and optimize machining strategies for efficiency and quality
- Load, edit, and troubleshoot CNC programs (within authorized scope)
- Perform first-article, in-process, and final inspections using advanced precision measurement tools
- Diagnose and resolve machining, tooling, and process issues to minimize scrap and downtime
- Work to tight tolerances and high-quality surface finish requirements
- Provide technical support and informal mentoring to less experienced machinists
- Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams on new or improved processes
- Maintain accurate production, inspection, and maintenance documentation
- Ensure compliance with all occupational health and safety standards and safe work practices
- Actively contribute to continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, and quality initiatives
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Journeyperson Machinist certification or equivalent experience
- Significant experience as a machinist, including advanced setup and troubleshooting
- Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T
- Demonstrated expertise using precision measuring and inspection equipment
- In-depth knowledge of machining processes, tooling, materials, and tolerances
- Ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy and accountability
Preferred:
- Red Seal Machinist certification (Canada) or equivalent credential
- Experience with advanced CNC equipment (e.g., multi-axis, live tooling, sub-spindles)
- Experience with CAD/CAM systems and process development
- Experience supporting prototype, small-batch, or high-precision manufacturing

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

- Work performed in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, rotating equipment, metal chips, oils, and coolants
