We are looking for two skilled Radiation Oncology Therapists to become part of our Radiation Medicine team at the community hospital!

Position Overview
The radiation therapist, working with minimal oversight, administers ionizing radiation to patients based on the directives and prescriptions provided by the radiation oncologist, adhering to established standards in radiation therapy technology.
Hours: 40 hours per week / Day Shift (Monday - Friday)
Location: Community Hospital - 295 Varnum Avenue - Lowell, MA
(We have two full-time positions available for this role)
Essential Qualifications:
1. An Associate’s degree in Radiologic Science.
2. Certification in Radiation Therapy from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART).
3. A valid license from the Massachusetts Radiation Control Board.
4. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
5. A minimum of one (1) year of experience in radiation therapy.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Three (3) years of experience in radiation therapy.
Key Responsibilities: The following duties are intended to outline the general nature of the work and are not exhaustive. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Administers the prescribed therapy accurately with minimal supervision.
2. Verifies prescription details, consent forms, diagnosis, patient identification, and daily treatment schedules before administering treatment.
3. Communicates procedures to patients to help alleviate their concerns and fears.
4. Reinforces the radiation oncologist’s guidance to patients regarding treatment reactions and care for the affected area.
5. Monitors patients for any adverse reactions to radiation treatment (e.g., skin reactions, gastrointestinal issues) and reports findings to the radiation oncologist and/or nursing staff.
6. Prepares the treatment room and equipment for each patient according to the prescription (e.g., immobilization devices, field size, wedges, bolus, distance, and positioning).
7. Assists patients in moving to and from treatment areas.
8. Safely transfers patients from stretchers and wheelchairs to the treatment couch, utilizing proper body mechanics.
9. Continuously monitors patients during treatment and simulation, using visible and audible communication systems, and is ready to halt treatment and assist if necessary.
10. Aids in simulations alongside the radiation oncologist.
11. Supports dosimetry procedures, including calculations and contouring.
12. Participates in weekly treatment visits.
13. Engages in patient chart conferences.
14. Conducts daily physics checks (machine calibrations) on all equipment to identify any malfunctions and reports findings to the appropriate personnel.
15. Maintains accurate daily records of treatments received, total doses, and any port films taken in the patient chart, ensuring clarity and organization. Documents any changes or modifications clearly, dating and initialing all alterations. Records events and incidents to promote quality improvement.
16. Utilizes the IMPAC computer system for charge capture, scheduling, and checklists.
17. Copies any necessary films and/or charts.
18. Performs minor clerical tasks such as answering phones, scheduling patients, and photocopying.
19. Takes weekly port films in accordance with established protocols.
20. Obtains external films and/or reports as needed.
21. Ensures the therapy department is clean and organized, with particular attention to patient areas and the laundry/linen area.
22. Transfers blocks into the treatment room and organizes them according to established guidelines.
23. Maintains the film file area in an orderly and neat manner.
24. Prepares the technical aspects of patient charts and labels simulation films accordingly.
25. Prepares diagnostic procedures using sterile techniques when necessary, in line with standard practices.
26. Regularly checks accessory equipment such as pendants, cables, and wedges for any signs of malfunction and notifies the appropriate personnel for repairs and maintenance.
Physical Requirements:
1. Frequent standing, occasional sitting and walking, and the ability to lift 30-35 lbs.
2. Capable of pushing, pulling, and moving stretchers and machines.
3. Requires manual dexterity for operating diagnostic equipment and computer keyboards.
4. Adequate hearing and vision to perform examinations, observe patients, read monitors and documents, and hear alarms from equipment and the hospital.
5. Close contact with patients who may have contagious diseases.
6. Exposure to radiation used in patient treatments.
7. Frequent interactions with patients, physicians, their families, and other hospital personnel.
Skills & Abilities:
1. A thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology is essential for evaluating laboratory data, medical history, and relevant symptoms to customize ultrasound examinations for each patient safely and accurately.
2. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
3. Attention to detail is crucial for ensuring patient education, safety, and comfort, as well as for discussing clinical situations with physicians.
4. Ability to maintain focus for extended periods while treating patients under various conditions.
5. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care for patients in the assigned service area.
6. Capable of working independently to perform examinations while seeking assistance from others and supervisors when needed.
7. Exhibits good judgment and creatively addresses problems while remaining focused and professional.
8. Responds calmly and appropriately to changes in the work schedule.
9. Collaborates effectively with co-workers and management to foster an environment conducive to high-quality patient care.
10. Knowledgeable in handling blocks and the proper use of all equipment.
11. Familiarity with standard practices that ensure quality care.
