Instructor, Practical Nursing (MSN Prepared) (12 Month)

Martin Community College

The Instructor, Practical Nursing is responsible for the design, delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement of classroom, laboratory, simulation, online, and clinical instruction within the Practical Nursing program at Martin Community College. This position supports student learning, licensure preparation, program outcomes, and the mission of the College while ensuring compliance with North Carolina Board of Nursing Education Rules, accreditation standards, clinical partner requirements, North Carolina Community College System standards, and Martin Community College policies and procedures. Instructional assignments may include day, evening, weekend, clinical, hybrid, and online courses and require effective use of instructional technology, student assessment practices, clinical evaluation methods, and learning management systems. In addition to fulfilling the general duties and expectations of curriculum faculty, the Practical Nursing Instructor assumes program-specific responsibilities necessary to support the operation, compliance, and effectiveness of the Practical Nursing program. The Instructor reports directly to the Director, Nursing and supports instructional needs within the Practical Nursing program, as assigned. Work Schedule The Practical Nursing Instructor is required to be on campus, in a clinical setting, or a combination of both for a minimum of 30 hours per week, with certain duties and responsibilities requiring more than 30 hours at various times during the academic term. The remaining 10 hours of the standard 40‑hour work week may be completed either on campus or at another approved location and should be dedicated to instructional preparation and support activities, including course development, grading, attendance, student communication, instructional planning, clinical preparation, reporting, and activities supporting student success, program compliance, and completion. Instructors are expected to maintain a regular schedule consistent with instructional assignments, clinical schedules, departmental needs, program operations, and institutional responsibilities. Work hours may vary based on teaching assignments, laboratory and simulation activities, clinical site schedules, student support requirements, recruitment activities, program events, and other instructional, program, or College‑related obligations. The work schedule may include daytime hours, early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends based on instructional schedules and clinical site requirements. Instruction and Curriculum Develop, organize, and deliver instruction in assigned Practical Nursing courses in accordance with approved curriculum standards, departmental guidelines, program outcomes, and North Carolina Board of Nursing requirements. Provide didactic, laboratory, simulation, online, and supervised clinical instruction. Prepare syllabi, lesson plans, instructional materials, assessments, clinical assignments, and learning activities aligned with student learning outcomes and program requirements. Integrate evidence‑based practice, clinical judgment, patient safety, quality improvement, ethical‑legal principles, and professional nursing standards into instruction. Utilize a variety of instructional methods and technologies to support diverse learning styles, including face‑to‑face, hybrid, online, laboratory, simulation, and clinical learning environments. Maintain course content, gradebooks, attendance records, and instructional materials within the College’s learning management system. Evaluate and revise instructional strategies, course materials, and learning activities based on assessment data, student performance, program outcomes, and regulatory expectations. Ensure instructional activities align with North Carolina Board of Nursing Education Rules, approved curriculum standards, accreditation requirements, and program outcomes. Evaluate and utilize Open Educational Resources (OER) and/or Affordable Educational Resources (AER) where appropriate to support student affordability, access, learning outcomes, and instructional quality. Select traditional textbooks or publisher‑supported resources when OER/AER materials are not feasible, available, or appropriate due to curricular, accreditation, licensure, or program‑specific needs. Clinical Supervision and Student Learning Supervise students in clinical settings to ensure safe patient care and adherence to clinical agency policies, program standards, and professional expectations. Collaborate with the Director, Nursing, Practical Nursing program leadership, faculty, and clinical partners to support high‑quality clinical learning experiences. Participate in the evaluation of clinical sites, student clinical performance, and clinical learning outcomes. Monitor student performance in classroom, laboratory, simulation, and clinical settings and provide timely feedback. Enforce standards related to professional conduct, academic integrity, clinical performance, patient safety, and ethical practice. Maintain eligibility to teach within the Practical Nursing program, including licensure, credentialing, continuing education, and clinical partner requirements. Assessment and Student Support Establish and apply fair, consistent, and transparent grading and evaluation practices. Evaluate student performance using established academic, laboratory, simulation, and clinical criteria consistent with program and North Carolina Board of Nursing requirements. Maintain accurate documentation of attendance, grades, skills competencies, clinical evaluations, remediation, and student progress. Provide academic advising, remediation, mentoring, and instructional support to promote student progression, retention, completion, and NCLEX‑PN licensure success. Work collaboratively with Disability Services to implement approved accommodations. Address student concerns professionally and report unresolved issues, classroom incidents, clinical concerns, or student performance issues to the appropriate supervisor. Administrative, Program, and Institutional Responsibilities Submit required reports, including attendance, grades, FTE, progress reports, clinical documentation, and other instructional or program‑related information, in a timely manner. Communicate effectively with students, supervisors, colleagues, clinical partners, and other stakeholders using College‑approved communication methods. Maintain regular office hours and an established schedule consistent with instructional assignments, clinical responsibilities, departmental expectations, and institutional needs. Participate in curriculum development, program planning, assessment, program evaluation, student learning outcomes assessment, and continuous quality improvement activities. Assist with data collection, reporting, and documentation required for North Carolina Board of Nursing approval, accreditation, program review, and institutional effectiveness. Support regulatory reviews, accreditation processes, clinical documentation reviews, and site visits as assigned. Participate in faculty meetings, committees, advisory committee activities, recruitment and retention initiatives, student orientation, professional development, and institutional events, including graduation. Collaborate with healthcare partners, workforce partners, advisory committees, and other stakeholders to support program effectiveness, clinical learning opportunities, and workforce alignment. Request, order, and manage instructional supplies, laboratory materials, clinical resources, and equipment in accordance with departmental procedures. Participate in the selection of textbooks, instructional materials, clinical resources, and library resources, as appropriate. Provide instructional or clinical coverage for other faculty, as needed and appropriate. Complete required institutional training, including FERPA, TitleIX, Campus Safety, and other required compliance or professional development activities. Stay current in assigned academic discipline, nursing practice, instructional best practices, regulatory requirements, and healthcare trends. Perform other related duties as assigned in support of the College’s mission. Required Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from a regionally accredited institution.
