Pharmacy Technician Supervisor

The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the pharmacy technician team to ensure the safe, accurate, and efficient delivery of pharmacy services in accordance with Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy regulations, federal and state laws, company policies, and quality standards. This position serves as the primary leader for pharmacy technicians, providing supervision, training, scheduling, performance management, and workflow coordination while supporting pharmacists in delivering exceptional patient care and customer service.

Qualifications

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
• National Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB or ExCPT)
• Minimum of three (4) years of retail pharmacy technician experience.
• Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory or leadership experience, or demonstrated leadership abilities.
• Thorough knowledge of retail pharmacy operations and prescription processing.
• Strong understanding of Massachusetts pharmacy regulations and HIPAA requirements.

Preferred

• Associate degree or higher.
• Immunization administration certification (if permitted and utilized by employer).
• Experience with pharmacy management software and electronic prescription systems.
• Experience managing workflow in a high-volume retail pharmacy.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Supervision

• Supervise and direct the daily activities of pharmacy technicians and pharmacy support staff.
• Develop and manage technician work schedules to ensure appropriate staffing levels.
• Help Pharmacy Director and Pharmacy Manager to recruit, interview, onboard, and train new pharmacy technicians.
• Provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunities.
• Together with Pharmacy Manager and Director conduct performance evaluations and address performance concerns in accordance with company policies.
• Promote a collaborative, professional, and customer-focused work environment.

Pharmacy Operations

• Coordinate daily workflow to ensure timely and accurate prescription processing.
• Monitor prescription preparation, data entry, labeling, inventory management, and customer service activities performed by pharmacy technicians.
• Ensure technicians perform duties within the scope of practice permitted under Massachusetts law.
• Maintain compliance with all pharmacy standard operating procedures.
• Support pharmacists in meeting operational, clinical, and customer service objectives.
• Assist with workflow improvements and implementation of operational best practices.
• Resolve escalated customer concerns in a timely manner.
• Collaborate with pharmacists and healthcare providers to facilitate patient care.
• Occasional evening, weekends, and holiday shifts may be required.

Regulatory Compliance

• Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including:
• Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy requirements
• Federal Controlled Substances Act and DEA regulations
• HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules
• OSHA workplace safety standards
• Company policies and procedures
• Monitor technician licensure and certification requirements to ensure ongoing compliance.
• Maintain accurate pharmacy records and required documentation.
• Participate in internal audits and regulatory inspections.

Inventory Management

• Oversee medication inventory, ordering, receiving, storage, and expiration date monitoring.
• Coordinating inventory counts and controlled substance documentation as required.
• Minimize medication waste and inventory shortages.
• Ensure compliance with medication storage and security requirements.

Quality Assurance

• Monitor technician accuracy and adherence to established quality standards.
• Identify workflow issues and implement corrective actions.
• Investigate and document medication incidents, near misses, and customer concerns.
• Promote continuous quality improvement initiatives.
