Senior UX/UI Designer (AI-Native Data & Intelligence Platform)

The Role

Modern is an AI-native data and intelligence platform for commerce brands. The UX/UI Design hire will be the first to shape the product experience for a broader audience—from sophisticated growth teams to founders running $8M skincare brands who may not yet understand incrementality .

Your mission: make something powerful feel intuitive without sacrificing depth. The challenge? Preserve the platform’s sophistication while ensuring clarity for all users, from day one.

What You’ll Own:

• Product experience , end-to-end: Information architecture, core flows, onboarding, dashboards, data visualization, empty/error states, and mobile.
• Onboarding and time-to-value : Ensure new users reach a useful insight in their first session without documentation.
• Data visualization : Design charts, tables, and comparisons with intuitive defaults and clear meaning.
• AI interaction design : Invent patterns for conversational/agentic interfaces—reasoning transparency, uncertainty handling, and trust signals.
• Design system : Standardize components, tokens, and patterns for engineering consistency.
• Marketing site and brand : Shape Modern’s visual identity and external perception.
• Research : Leverage internal AI Residency users (expert operators) while expanding insights beyond them.

What Success Looks Like:

• First 30 days : Audit user pain points and prioritize fixes with unfiltered feedback.
• First 90 days : Redesign onboarding, establish a design system, and outline a UX debt roadmap.
• First 6 months : Redesign core dashboards, improve activation metrics, and embed design as a core function.
• First 12 months : Enable non-technical users to self-serve value, ship a production-ready design system, and align marketing with product quality.

Who You Are:

• 5+ years designing SaaS products with shipped work demonstrating problem-solving, constraints, and iterative improvements.
• Proven ability to simplify complex software (e.g., analytics, BI, fintech) for non-technical users.
• Fluency in data visualization , chart types, and dashboard design pitfalls.
• Active engagement with AI design trends , including conversational interfaces and tool integration.
• Self-sufficient design function: scope, design, ship, and measure—no delegation.
• Advocacy skills: Articulate design impact on activation, retention, and revenue.
• Prototyping expertise: Figma, code, or AI-assisted tools to validate ideas.

Bonus Points:

• Front-end coding ( React/Tailwind ) or precise specs for shipped work.
• Experience with e-commerce/DTC/marketing analytics/attribution .
• First design hire experience and lessons learned.
• Conversational/agentic interface design.
• Portfolio showcasing brand/identity alongside product work.
