Job Title: Mechanical Engineer
Job Purpose and Position Overview: Snow & Company is seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team in Fremont. This is a hands-on, design-focused role where you'll take the lead on complex mechanical systems for commercial workboats and advanced maritime vessels. From propulsion and fuel to HVAC and steering, your work will directly influence the performance, reliability, and safety of every vessel we build.
This position requires both technical expertise and practical creativity. You’ll exercise a high degree of independent judgment while collaborating closely with production teams, regulatory agencies, and engineers. If you're passionate about marine systems and thrive in fast-paced environment while demonstrating a high attention to detail, this is the role for you.
Right now is an especially exciting time to come aboard—we’re building two state-of-the-art electric tugboats, managing a full dry dock construction, and kicking off a major eight-year contract to build advanced workboats for the U.S. Navy. Join us as we push the boundaries of maritime innovation and craftsmanship.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and produce detailed mechanical system designs for marine vessels, including:
- Propulsion
- HVAC
- Fuel
- Bilge
- Ballast
- Steering systems
- Create fabrication-ready drawings, P&IDs, and installation packages, ensuring alignment with shipyard workflows and sequencing.
- Provide technical oversight and on-the-ground support during fabrication, machinery installation, and system integration.
- Coordinate closely with production managers, pipefitters, welders, and outfitters to ensure design intent is clearly communicated and achievable.
- Interface with regulatory bodies and classification societies (e.g., ABS, USCG) to ensure designs meet applicable codes and inspection criteria as well as a fundamental understanding of good/typical marine practice and marine operational demands.
- Conduct equipment selection, piping layout, and system sizing using appropriate engineering tools and standards.
- Support material procurement by preparing BOMs, reviewing vendor documentation, and participating in technical evaluations.
- Perform system commissioning planning and assist with troubleshooting during dock and sea trials.
- Maintain clear documentation throughout project lifecycle, including as-built updates and system operation manuals.
- Collaborate with naval architects, electrical engineers, and project managers to ensure cohesive system integration across disciplines.
Essential Skills:
- Minimum 5 years of professional mechanical engineering experience in the marine industry, with demonstrated success in vessel design, construction, or repair.
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline, with hands-on experience in shipyard operations and/or marine systems integration.
- Proven problem-solving ability and a proactive, adaptable approach to supporting production in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision, exercising sound engineering judgment and initiative.
- Proficient in CAD and 3D modeling software such as AutoCAD, Rhino, or SolidWorks; experience aligning designs with shipyard workflows and production methods preferred.
- Strong grasp of marine mechanical principles and experience designing or supporting systems such as propulsion, HVAC, fuel, ballast, and steering.
- Familiarity with classification society and regulatory requirements (e.g., ABS, USCG), with a solid understanding of marine standards and operational demands.
- Skilled in diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical issues during system commissioning, sea trials, or vessel repairs.
- Broad knowledge of and established relationships with marine vendors, suppliers, and other crucial shipyard resources
Certifications / Licenses:
- Professional Engineering License (Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering, or Mechanical) Preferred
Physical and Environmental Demands:
This position is based in an office within an active boatyard and requires regular visits to vessels and production areas. These environments involve moderate to high noise levels, uneven surfaces, and physical access challenges such as inclined gangways and vertical ladders. Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and strict adherence to safety protocols are mandatory.
Pay and Benefits:
- $100,000 - $150,000 Annually
- Full time, overtime exempt position
- Positive and supportive work environment
- 100% paid medical insurance for employees, 80% for spouses and dependents
- Comprehensive dental insurance
- Vision insurance
- Life insurance options available
- 401(k) retirement plan with employer match up to 5%
- Paid Time Off plan
- 9 paid holidays, including the day after the Super Bowl
