Job Description

This role is responsible for accurately reading work orders and safely gathering, moving, and staging cut lumber and metal connector plates required for the production of roof and floor trusses. You ensure the correct materials are available at the right locations, maintain a clean and organized work area, and operate forklifts and other warehouse equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret pick lists, work orders, and production schedules, whether typed, handwritten, or displayed on a computer screen, to determine required lumber sizes, grades, and quantities.
• Pull and stage the correct lumber and metal connector plates for production workers, ensuring accuracy in size, grade, and quantity.
• Move raw cut lumber and metal connector plates from receiving or staging areas to designated saw stations and assembly tables using forklifts and other material handling equipment.
• Inspect lumber for defects, warps, or damage before passing materials to builders, and ensure only acceptable materials are used in production.
• Keep saw and assembly zones tidy, safe, and organized to reduce workplace hazards and support efficient workflow.
• Safely operate sit-down forklifts and other warehouse machinery to transport heavy bundles of wood and related materials.
• Pull plates and ensure they are properly staged for truss building operations.
• Lift and stack product off lumber carts, band and mark product accurately, and push or pull product on carts to designated areas within the facility.
• Perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance of equipment and the work area to keep operations running smoothly.
• Follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment, including steel-toed boots, safety glasses, ear plugs, and gloves.
• Support shipping and receiving activities by loading and unloading materials, assisting with inventory, and ensuring materials are correctly placed in the warehouse.
• Use measuring tools, such as tape measures, to verify material dimensions as needed for production and quality control.

• At least 6 months of recent forklift operating experience, preferably with sit-down forklifts.
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret work orders, pick lists, and production schedules in multiple formats (typed, handwritten, and on computer screens).
• Experience in warehouse operations, including material handling, picking, loading, unloading, and inventory-related tasks.
• Ability to use a tape measure and pass a measuring skills test with a score of 90% or better.
• Capability to lift 50 or more pounds consistently throughout the shift.
• Knowledge of basic safety practices in a warehouse or construction-type environment, including proper use of PPE.
• Attention to detail when inspecting lumber and materials for defects or damage.
• Ability to maintain an organized, clean, and safe work area while managing multiple tasks.

• Background in shipping and receiving operations, including handling inbound and outbound materials.
• Experience working in an indoor construction or truss-building environment.
• Familiarity with inventory processes and material tracking in a warehouse setting.
• Comfort working around dust, dirt, and equipment noise in an active production facility.
• Strong work ethic and reliability, with consistent performance verified through references.
• Ability to work effectively on either first or second shift and attend required orientation.

You will work in an indoor construction-style environment, away from cold, windy, and rainy conditions, allowing for greater comfort and consistency throughout the year. The facility offers structured shifts, clear expectations, and a focus on safety with required protective equipment. You will have the opportunity to develop and refine your forklift and material handling skills in a production setting that values accuracy, organization, and teamwork.

Work Environment

The role is based in an indoor construction-type facility focused on truss building, with typical conditions that include dust, dirt, and equipment noise. Work is performed inside, providing protection from outdoor weather such as cold, wind, and rain. Two shifts are available: first shift from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM and second shift from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with both shifts attending orientation at 7:30 AM on the first day. The environment includes active use of forklifts, carts, and other material handling equipment. Required attire includes appropriate personal protective equipment such as steel-toed boots, safety glasses, ear plugs, and gloves, supporting a safety-conscious workplace.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of La Crescent, MN.

The pay range for this position is $18.25 - $19.75/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in La Crescent,MN.
